I'm developing a facebook connect website, so I have an application fan page for it that I'd to make proper use of. I don't currently have an in-facebook application ready to use.
In the app profile page is there any way the 'Go to application' button can be changed to a 'Go to website' button? I can't see any way to do this.
As a work-around, the button goes to the website, which uses some javascript to break out of the frame.
This isn't exactly smooth for visitor though, and I imagine it could be against facebook connect guidelines or something, forcing the visitor out of facebook with no warning.

There must be a better way of doing this that I haven't come across yet?

I had the same problem. To fix it, within the Facebook configuration of my application, I blanked out the "Canvas Page URL" but put the URL of my site as the "Canvas Callback URL". The "Go to application" button is still displayed, but clicking on it takes the user to my website. Within Facebook, search for StudyStack to see it in action.
