Facebook is well renowned as being one of the most used apps on iOS, but also the most badly coded, slowest and buggiest app on the app store. Many average iPad users use the app huge amounts; I wouldn't be surprised if it came second place to an app like Safari.

The average consumers experience of the Facebook app reflects on the iPad, and diminishes the experience and joy people have with using it. I know many individuals who are not technologically minded believe that the flaws in the Facebook app are actually flaws in the iPad. I also know many people who dislike the iPad BECAUSE of the Facebook app: it's just awful!

I know that Facebook don't give a damn about Facebook for iPad, as this produces no revenue due to the absence of advertising on it - but one of the most frequently used apps on the iPad is probably THE buggiest on the app store. Pictures take about 5 seconds to flick from one to the next; some buttons don't respond or are not linked to any command; profiles do not load; it crashes to the home screen many times after a few hours of use. All of this delivers negatively on the iPad experience. And using the web browser is an insufficient solution, as it's poorly optimised and offers no chat or notification features (in fact notifications don't work on the actual app)

Why do you think Facebook allows an immensley popular app like this to be released in such a tragic state; with updates only making the predicament worse!? Surely it also rubs off badly on them? Do they have NO experienced developers? Could Apple ever step in and get in contact with Facebook over these issues - these issues which are greatly affecting the experience of iPad users?

The Facebook App is just utter crap. I can open the app up now and it still says I have a notification from like a week ago. I click on that notification on Facebook and it takes me to the status post but guess what? Facebook still thinks I have a notification. A computer science student in high school could do a better job coding this app. If I was the lead programmer behind this app I would never allow it to be released and be refused to be apart of it if it was. It's almost as if they decided to release the Alpha version instead.

They have the only 1-star review I've ever left on the app store.

The BlackBerry FaceBook application is much better, because it's not made by FaceBook. :p

It doesn't reflect badly on iOS, only on Facebook.

The current version of the Facebook app is so slow that by the time I turn my laptop on it's almost faster to just use my laptop to check it. I really wish Google+ would take off.

I'm not sure how much it reflects on iOS or apple, but I agree that the FB app for the iPad needs a ton of work. It's gotten a little better over time, but for someone who uses the iPad as I do (see my signature...) it's a real pain to have to go to my iMac to tweak a setting or whatever that's not available within the iPad app.

the app actually manages to get worse with each update. Every bug they fix opens up 5 more. Right now when I look at my newsfeed, the profile pictures next to the status updates are COMPLETELY RANDOM. I might be looking at Mike's status update, but it shows Jessica's picture. It's not just one or two, it's every status in my newsfeed. It makes things pretty confusing, especially when making plans. Pictures almost never load. Viewing an individual profile take a long time to load if it loads at all.

Yeah it's total crap. I can't imagine why Facebook doesn't hire a couple of people who don't suck at developing iOS apps to just get it right.

    Agreed!

I hate that damn app. I can be scrolling down my newsfeed and all of a sudden it'll just change over the the events page as if it was magic. It's so aggravating. Profiles take forever to load. I check a notification and the comment that I was notified about won't even display until I pull down to refresh or completely leave it and come back again. It's just a terrible app. Don't understand how such a large company with so much money can't hire a decent developer to make a new app.

i think the original developer left and I guess whoever has taken over isn't that bothered about quality control and a classic example of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

I've pretty much given up with it since whenever i look at a post i'm told i can't view it due to privacy... goto the web site and can view it without a problem!

I agree, you have to open up the multitask window and quit the App for it to work.

True but what i think the OP was saying is that for people that don't know any better and think their iPad or iPhone is an all in one Facebook machine, they think there's a problem with their device rather than just the app.

I think that's a great point. Not everyone is an expert on this stuff so they might just assume it's all the fault of Apple.

One thing is clear, for whatever reason Facebook simply does not care about their mobile apps. I have no idea why. Probably because there are no ads and no revenue generated by people looking at it. And think about it from their end, why should they care? A crap ton of people still download it and use it. What are we gonna do? Boycott their free app??

The Facebook app is no different to what you get with the Web App (going to Safari and adding the page to your Home Screen.

And they both perform abysmally, although the Safari web app version isn't as smooth in terms of UI animations, but they're both comparable in terms of how poorly they do the job.

I was talking about this on Twitter the other day... It's mind blowing that a BIG company like Facebook can't (won't) get a simple app right, but a small start-up has no problem making Tweetbot run as smooth as butter. Especially considering the amount of money Facebook has available and the length of time their app has been around.
This is just lame. They must be doing this on purpose, and trying to get people to get on Facebook from their computers so they can sell them adds and such. That's the only reason I can come up with.
The bottom line is that the Facebook app has been consistently the buggiest app i've ever used on my iPhone.

I'm not so sure about that. I agree that it shouldn't reflect badly on iOS, but indirectly it does have an effect. Especially more casual users. Many people will shout "ARRGG my iPhone sucks!!" if an app is being particularly buggy, annoying, etc. Now it could be the app is very poorly written, but a lot of people will just lump the whole iPhone experience into the "iPhone". That's something that Apple has actually done a very good job of cultivating.

Also a lot of people saying android sucks because they have terrible apps, or WP7 sucks because they don't have that many apps. Those aren't necessarily the fault of the OS itself but the individual apps. If many of your core apps that you use a lot are buggy it will annoy you and could lead to you switching from iPhone to something else.
