Huh? HTC could most certainly create a phone for Facebook for Facebook to then install a forked version of Andrioid.

If it wants to remain a member of the open handset alliance it can't.

Amazon was able to fork Android for its own purposes as it isn't a member of the OHA.

Acer were prevented from doing the same as they're a member of the OHA and are bound by its terms (in the post you quoted). HTC, being an OHA member are bound by those exact same terms.

If HTC never want to release a Google sanctiond android handset and leave the OHA, I guess they could but that would leave them with a Facebook branded forked release of Android and Windows Phone in their smartphone arsenal.

Not a good place to be.

I don't think I would buy a product from a company that resides on Hacker Way, that's a tip-off.

Facebook.............what a joke.

There is no evidence to prove Tumblr is more popular than Facebook. Mostly because it isn't.

My evidence is that I teach high school computers and have a lab full of high school students all day. Tumblr is the #1 time suck. It is not that they don't use Facebook, but they spend more time and are more excited about Tumblr right now.

Anecdotal evidence has never been a reliable source. Ever.

You want anecdotal evidence? The people I was friends with in high school have never read the Harry Potter books. I guess they must not be popular.

It makes sense for FB to fork Android because they wouldn't want their phone to be a portal to Google Services anyway. They also have an ecosystem (FB credits, FB games, partnerships with companies like Target) that could jumpstart a FB app store or a storefront.

But search, maps, etc all need to have Google alternatives and that is hard as hell to implement. Which is why Google's able to reign over the OHA - they got the best IP out there.

I'm really curious what FB's strategy here is. I'm hoping they got some revolutionary vision to integrate social networking into phones and that this isn't just grasping at straws to monetize off mobile.

OMG Who WOULDN'T want a Facebook Phone!

I mean, you get the best of both worlds - an OS that attracts malware like flies to honey, customized by the company whose entire business model is based on snatching personal information from its "customers" and selling it to the highest bidder? I mean, it just makes me feel warm all over...

Post: 'Your best friend has just finished an hour long phone conversation with your wife/girl friend in the middle of the night'.

Take a picture with your phone, automatically uploaded to Facebook complete with the location and time.

Having an app for facebook is enough, they have already taken it to far especially with those tags at the bottom of webpages asking you to share this and the fact that every company out there tell you to search for them on facebook for more details.

Facebook, I only have because everyone else has it and instead of people organising and sharing things over a phone call or text they just do it all on Facebook instead. it's ironic how Facebook is classed as social network website yet in many respects it's the most unsocial thing out there.

Facebook = Microsoft + Google :D.

According to reports, the device would be an HTC handset running a Facebook-modified version of Android.

Zuckerberg: "We'll give you $1 billion in cash to bomb Samsung's headquarters in Seoul. Conventional artillery would be fine."

Kim Jong-Un: "No. $1.5 billion or your FaceFone will fail."

HTC: "OK, we'll flip you 500 million too. $1.5 billion total. Take it or leave it."

Kim Jong-Un: "We'll get back to you after we've built some deeper bunkers. To avoid the B-2 shock and awe."

Ok

So now you have a phone with google collecting data to sell on you, with Facebook slapped on top also collecting all your personal info and everything you do with the duo platform is meshed together as we'll.

Jesus

Now I'm no conspiracy theorist but that seems like trouble to me.

I'll probably buy one just to have a nice anti trust and privacy suit going.

Facebook has such a terrible brand yet is rated so high on the stock market. Expect that to plummet if this is a phone announcement

I suspect Apple has slowed down its roll-out of new products temporarily to catch its breath but also to slow down competitors who do nothing but copy Apple ideas ahead of the drop-dead date for getting new products ready for the Christmas season. It's a smart move on both counts. Get your competitors to commit to older tech and then leap forward.

lol wut?

Really? Google has been doing it for a decade. They even scan your email to get information about you. If you're worried about anyone, worry about Google.

I hope you're not naive enough to believe that Apple doesn't harvest your data as well.

If you worry about google, worry about your banks and credit cards, they collect far more data than google.

Apple also collects your data

People are already becoming restless and wanting to leave. The only reason people are still on Facebook is because everyone else is a member. This would have sold a ton around 2008-2009.

Very true. I wish they'd gone public (stock) in 2008; I would have bought a ton. By the time they did their IPO, it was too late.

This is how I understand it:

It's not a phone.
It may be preinstalled on a phone from HTC.
It will install on top of any android phone, eventually.
It doesn't fork android.
It gives integration like iOS' Facebook integration.
It goes further by providing a new home screen.
All android phones can become Facebook phones...

Facebook can't get a partnership with Google to deliver iOS 6-like integration into Android, so Facebook has to build it themselves. However android allows deeper integration so Google's attempts to keep Facebook out really will backfire.
