The Chinese data show that case fatality rate (the relevant metric here) is 0.4% outside of Hubei province. That's still worse than an average seasonal flu, but it's not the 2.3% figure everyone has been quoting.

I have hope that the true number is even lower than the 0.4% so far. A similar thing happened with the H1N1 "Swine Flu" where it was thought to be highly lethal at first, was later downgraded to being very dangerous, and only years later after they were able to do studies and find antibodies to show there were lots of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic people walking around were they finally able to get a more realistic mortality rate.

Anyway, let's throw out the death rates. Let's assume the CFR is .02%, which is on par for a moderately bad historical flu year. HOLY CRAP did you see what it did to Wuhan's healthcare system? There were reports of people collapsing outside of hospitals and images of people getting treated on the floor in the lobby of the ER. I don't have a public health degree so I don't know what a .02% flu fatality rate might look compared to a .04% rate, but I wouldn't expect the lobby of any hospital to look like a warzone medical post.

I don't even talk about the numbers when I voice my concern. We won't truly know until years later anyway. What is plain as day is that this is something that can get badly out of hand quickly.

the common flu kills way more people every year than this virus. Overhype is more dangerous than the virus is.

Yes, so far, but either the historic flu isn't nearly as lethal as this seems to be or this is way way more contagious, which means if it's not checked it will end up killing far more people than the flu does.

The government of China does not just shut down the engine of its economy for no good reason or because they bought into some hype. Their actions show us that they don't value human life as much as most countries do in the West. They're not going to shut down their factories just because they think it's going to be a very bad flu year and a tiny percentage of their population is going to die.

Take a deep breath. Be careful, make the preparations you see fit, but don’t panic. Panic, whether inflicted on yourself or others, serves no positive purpose. Instead, try to calm fears — not excite them. We need leaders during challenging times. You cannot lead with panic.

I cannot afford attending WWDC so it wouldn't make a big difference to me, but I wish they gave developers more opportunities to get in touch with Apple engineers easily, and remotely.
WWDC is great not only for the conference as you can watch the video but because you have labs and you have a chance to meet a lot of fellow devs. I can meet iOS developers at other conferences, but the labs are only at WWDC and it is the only chance you have.
I don't know if they'll cancel it, but they ought to give betas in June and postponing the conference for a couple of weeks wouldn't make a big difference for the virus. Either they'll have WWDC at the beginning of June or they'll make it "virtual"

I'd like that, IF the virtual attendees got a discount. I've never been to WWDC, but it seems like there's a whole to do at WWDC that can't be done virtually. Things networking, the WWDC Bash, etc.
One can already get 95% of that virtual conference for free (well, no additional charge), if you're a registered developer - the WWDC app (recently renamed "Developer") gives complete access to most of the developer talks from WWDC, spanning from 2019 all the way back to 2014 (though they only have a few back that far).

Would be nice if the sessions were all streamed live (and if all the docs were immediately available, etc.)

I love the comments here.

"This is nothing to be concerned about". "Nothing to see here, pure hysteria, media-based panic marketing".

That's the best case scenario, fellas. I HOPE that's all it is.

However, given the whistle-blower in China, a doctor, DIED from it, coupled with the fact that every major agency is dealing with this thing, lets me know that I can't just simply go: "Aaahhh, it's nothing".

It's classic conservative whataboutism: "This Novel Coronavirus is dangerous". "Well, what about the flu? It's killed more people".

What about cancer, or traffic accidents, or heart disease, or obesity?

ONE THING DOESN'T CANCEL THE OTHER.

Smarter, better-educated people than me are concerned about this disease, so I DEFINITELY what to stay informed on what's going on, and I want relevant agencies doing whatever they can to end it BEFORE it kills ME.

That said, I still go about my day without thinking about it TOO much. Not more than the bazillion other things in this world that are trying to kill me, at least.

Oh I totally agree. I suspect one part of the reason for not doing that is to have a chance to make them pretty, and avoid the possibility of, say, someone blurting out real NDA material that they prefer not get broadcast worldwide. Plus, just it requires making more bits all work in realtime. But I'd like that too. I suspect they'll head that way eventually.

holy media hype wtf. this is less serious than the flu and we're talking cancelling stuff in may... unreal

It’s literally 10–20x more deadly than the flu. Good lord this is just dangerous ignorance.

Maybe you should grab the next flight to Wuhan. I’ll pay.
