Social media is particularly damaging for teen age females. Emotionally devastating and addictive like crack. The data on this is pretty strong. Don’t let your teenage daughters do social media. Pre-teens? That’s just even more loony.
Well yeah, it’s why FB is trying to hook them while they’re really young.

Instagram for kids will be analogous to online betting/gambling companies offering you a ‘free!’ £/$ 5-10 bet for signing up

ie it’s to get you hooked.

It’ll be a feeder for the adult product.

Facebook needs a constant revenue of new user personal data to sell to third party companies because Facebook in my opinion is running out of user data to sell. Third part companies will not accept repeat user data, they want new user data.
Facebook doesn't literally sell user data. They use your data to be able to target ads at you, and other companies pay them to do that.

I think the more likely reason is to get kids into the ecosystem as early as possible, so when they're old enough their account can be automatically migrated to the "real" Instagram.

It is pretty sick IMO. They're clearly thinking more about their own profit than the effects on kids' development. But what else would you expect from a company like Facebook?

I'm so glad I don't want kids.
I admire those who want, but growing up functional human beings in this landscape must be hell... with all the dangers of the web and social media.
Imagine teens in the 2030s....

it is already crazy, todays teenager have grown up with social media as their reality. They are experts at posting their pictures and meaningless words but they don't know how to create a folder to organise homework - or send an email.

It’s even worse, they have found a social way of “legislating” what moods and emotions and thoughts should even be allowed. The fake positivity has a severe negative impact on society.

There may be a gender element, but what social media actually does to your brain crosses gender/age/any lines. I spend a lot of time discussing intermittent reinforcement with my clients. A lot of folks think about the secondary impacts (sexual predators, etc.) but the primary ones are the ones that are rewiring people's brains. I've been on my soapbox for years about this with my clients. Nothing is more powerful than intermittent reinforcement. You only have to look at how hooked people are to checking their email or picking up their phone when it buzzes, even for productive reasons (work). The longer we can delay that with kids and start to talk about how to do things a little more mindfully, the better.

What's wild, is how every client defends their dependence. "I use it for educational podcasts" etc. As soon as I tell them to try and experiment for the week and read the book that a podcast discusses instead of consuming media rapidly, their anxiety drops off a cliff lol. Heck, even moving an app you use a lot to a different screen can change your relationship with it.

So much this..... :) That's another topic I have to spend a lot of time on with clients. Totally flies in the face of every therapy modality.

Facebook will release this app regardless of who it helps or hurts.

I tend to shy away from labels like “evil”, but Facebook has repeatedly demonstrated that they will do whatever they want, whenever they want, regardless of any potential harm involved. Facebook is running the classic play from history’s playbook: isolate and indoctrinate children, silence the parents, attempt to control the world. To the average person, it’s almost incomprehensible: why would Facebook want to do all of this? Don’t they care about others? And some of Facebook‘s actions are so outlandish that the mind simply can’t accept it - the mind can’t believe that another’s motives could be so self-serving and destructive and so Facebook’s behavior is chalked up as one’s own misunderstanding. How far does Facebook have to push before people collectively push back? At what point does the pain of inaction exceed the pain of resistance?

At a greater scale we have ALL of big tech and the biggest mainstream media entities uniting behind causes and ideas that are creating more TENSION than harmony. The CNN director interview leaks should be a slap in the face to every single person, regardless of your political views - you are being knowingly, willingly, actively manipulated. They know what they’re doing and they aren’t even ashamed. And it’s not just CNN doing it - CNN just happened to be the ones caught on camera. They’re all complicit and they are hoping that everyone will neatly line up in sorted columns of “left” or “right”. They are making us each other’s enemies for their own benefit. Any attempts to call-out this behavior will result in media retribution or removal of posts from social media. Right now, today, Facebook & Twitter will actively block you from posting a link to a NEWS ARTICLE about a BLM co-founder’s house purchasing habits. This isn’t even a link to Malware - it’s a link to thoughts, ideas, and information.

Facebook’s position is enviable: everyone jokes about the users “being the product”, but it’s true! The users have no incentive to use (non-existent) alternatives because the cost to use Facebook is FREE. Businesses are hungry to advertise and reach new customers and so they’re forced to keep pumping money into Facebook. Now that Facebook has a captive audience they can impregnate people with any ideas they choose, and it’s the predictable set of strategies employed for centuries. First and foremost, Facebook is a tabloid where you actually know all the people. Keep the users distracted with their carefully curated trophy shelves. Second, drive the agendas that keep people distracted and actively deter constructive thought and criticism - no sharing of information. Third, send confusing messages to maintain control and prevent people from waking up to reality. Example: accuse everyone of systemic racism and stereotyping of one group, and then immediately show videos of that same group rioting, looting, and starting buildings on fire. NO ONE WILL KNOW WHAT TO THINK.

All that to say: Facebook is evil. And their accomplices are just as disgusting.

I‘m in the middle of building a semi-modular synthesizer. You know what that is? Its a big analog computer that makes beautiful music. There is no GUI, no display to look at, just knobs and patch cables (and potted plants apparently). It connects to thousands of other beautiful analog synth modules and effects pedals through Control Voltage, it doesn‘t connect to the internet or your refrigerator or to the gutter of humanity. There is no advertising, no nudge theory at work, it doesnt hijack your brains hormone levels to keep you addicted via outrage and anger. It’s an open door to math and electronics and synthesis theory and however far you step into it, it immediately rewards you with beautiful sounds. Compared to the sewer pipe of the internet, and the trash culture it has spawned, the Seni-Mod UX is all positive, no negative. I think this is the very best kind of computer I’ve yet found. ...maybe the best use of technology period.

You sir are a rare individual.

I hope these plans are scrapped not because I hate Facebook and their shady practices, or Zuck himself, but because it’s a borderline cruel concept.

No child should have to suffer the emotional weight of social network platforms. Let them have their innocence and focus on the most important thing: growing up.
You want kids to “grow up”? What’s wrong with being child-like?

I work in an elementary school and see this all day. It is awful to see how social media affects kids in a bad way.

Mark Zuckerburg already looked like someone that should stay away from kids. Wanting to create Pedogram just makes him even creepier. Wonder if he likes adrenochrome.
