This sounds like a case of execs coming up with an idea and announcing it before doing their due diligence with the engineering teams to fully understand the LOE (level of effort) involved. Then they get a sense of what it'll take and have to walk things back a bit.

If you work at FB, is it ok to talk about your job while at dinner party? There is such universal hate for FB, most of if justified, yet people work there.

I think if they got somebody smart to replace Uckerburg, the hate factor would go way down even if the practices remained the same. He is just so easy to not like.
While Zuck is a huge reason for why FB is seen as it is, I still think you'd have people questioning why someone would want to work there with the reputation it already has. I have a number of colleagues who have been at FB for a while now. Many were there because of the prior hype. Now it seems they're there either because they've been there for years and their retention is top notch, or they're new there and are getting nice fat checks.

I'm personally laughing that they've delayed this feature not until next year ... but 2023. Sounds like they're not even close to getting it down right, plus might need to refocus on different areas of the app. FB just sounds like they're in major pain.

Even a company like Twitter is coming up strong for an "old geezer" of an app. Facebook is just slow and surely turning into the next MySpace. They're a "revival" short of seeing their downfall (yes, I know, Instagram is still hot. IG still has maintained it's distance from FB thanks to their platform focus - FashionNova is protecting their behinds! lol)

"...We're taking our time to get this right..." meaning, to add end-2-end encryption while still being able to sneak around when they want. Thats their definition of "right".

Just saved me having to type a very similar opinion.

I think you'll find that the umpteen bazillion active FB/insta users aren't quite on board with your "There is such universal hate for FB".

I for one use both FB and insta and whatsapp for certain things. I'm well aware that they skim everything I do for keywords for the purposes of selling advertising. I'm well aware that all the social media use very sophisticated AI algorithms to try to keep me hooked to their feed. Awareness is power. I simply give zero cares about them skimming for advertising purposes. Even if I didn't use adblockers extensively, I would actually prefer targeted ads to non. And as for addiction to the feed, no one posts anything interesting enough, often enough, to even get me to bother looking at the feed all that often. But I find it extremely useful for fb groups, for finding local events, and so on. There is nothing in my life so amazingly private that I would actually post on social media. I mean, who in their right mind would? So why would I care if MetaBeta can see all my social media stuff? Zero f's given. All this privacy beat up is a pure joke. If something in your life is private, then don't go putting it on the internet ffs. If you want to message someone, and it is an actual genuinely private convo that could genuinely harm you if it got out, then use an open source messaging service w encryption like signal. Or if it's something seriously seriously private, then use PGP to encrypt it yourself before sending it with whatever service is convenient.

In conclusion, FB has a lot of very useful tools. Just like guns, they are a tool that can be either dangerous or useful, depending on how you use them.

Or rather, the reverse is probably true.

encryption and privacy are not even in the vocabulary of people who use these apps.
Encryption and privacy are not relevant to the context in which I use these apps.

The moment I have something sensitive or private to share, I'm using other, more secure communication channels.

Facebook has a bridge to sell you. I encrypt Facebook by not using Facebook.
Even if you've never signed up or used a Facebook product, they still have a shadow profile of you and track you everywhere you go online.

Secret governments pressure is forcing Facebook Companies in this area just as it has forced Apple to weaken and delay full encryption rollouts and ultimately spy on its users.

Dangerous trend.

Can you share some concrete evidence that support your claims?

not on my mac.. Im sure the phone people are tracked but they are the lowest common denominator of users anyway..
