I admit, I laughed at the people at the beginning of this thread essentially declaring nuclear war at the companies that filed this briefing

Steve Jobs once said:

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

He also said this:

''Good artists copy; great artists steal."

In other words, stealing is good unless it happens to Apple. #nobias

I placed this note in the eBay feedback page:

Just to let you know that I am seriously considering canceling my account with you since you filed a briefing with the court against Apple. Your actions are very wrong headed in the business environment. Your corporation is base out of the US and you're siding with a foreign company that is doing serious harm to a company based in the US. I wonder if I should report you to the NSA, FBI, CIA, and others. Do you have products for sale that harm US citizens from terrorist organizations? I may send an inquiry to the California State Attorney General for your actions.

Yeah, the NSA, FBI, and CIA are going to get right on that case. Jesus. Get out of your parents' basement. And I can guarantee you that Ebay employees are laughing at you right now.

The level of "stealing" that Samsung does is entirely different in scope. Apple is rarely if ever the first company in a given product category, but they don't try to make carbon copies of competing products.

That said, I really do want to know if Apple has ever committed the same kind of "flattery" that Samsung did in regards to devices, accessories, and packaging as seen in one of the pictures on the first page. There is no doubt that Samsung tried to ape every aspect of the iPhone, and it would be equally as unacceptable if Apple ever tried to do the same with another product.

And for the record- I think Jobs' big issue with Android wasn't Android itself, but rather Eric Schmidt's role in the development of Android. In my opinion, Android was tastefully done- though it copied many of the UI paradigms from the iPhone, it's clear that Google wasn't trying to make it look like iOS. Schmidt's ambiguous role aside, I think that's how copying should work. Take inspiration, not the product itself.

Same old story, a thread about samsung, same old same old.

MR knows these stories result in posts and are a huge click bait. And we are the suckers in this zoo ;)

personally I am disapointed how many good knowledgeable posters no longer post on MR, cause they go abused as being haters over time..... our loss!
I certainly agree with you on the first two lines. We all fell for the bait! :p

Regarding the part about people leaving MacRumors, I'm guessing many of those people who have left did so because they simply didn't use many Apple products anymore. After all, what's the point of sticking around on an Apple forum if you're all Android and Windows, for example?

Some people leave this forum after many years and move onto other products, and some people buy their first Apple product and sign up here. The consumer tech world is becoming relatively fluid in terms of moving between competing products, so we're likely to see more of that as time goes on.

It's a strawman.. If Samsung took inspiration from a 1950's floor standing speaker for their computer instead of very closely imitate the appearence of their competitors computer, I don't think people would have issues with that here.
Of course not, as only stealing ideas from Apple is bad when on Mac Forums.
Apple has also and thankfully take ideas from their competitors too. Imagine if all the good ideas that get invented were only ever allowed to be used on one company's products. Only one make of car had cruise control, only one one had indicators, only one had power steering......

Samsung had an "iPhone" looking phone out before the iPhone.

1. That wasn't a smart phone.

2. Apple created the modern smart phone.

3. So, after 1 + 2, no they didnt come out with it first.

Oh look, a bunch of criminals whose products all borrowed from apple one way or the other are banding together to portray apple as the evil one.

Let's see these companies' contributions:

Google: favours samsung because without sammy, android is nothing.
Dell: A dying pc company trying to get as much exposure as possible
HP: A company known for making Mac knockoffs
Ebay: A company that specializes in selling cheap chinese knockoffs
Newegg: A company that sells overpriced PC parts that caters to basement-dwelling windows fanboys.
Facebook: Still sour over their epic failure Facebook phone

1. Every industry is similar, Fast-food, Fashion, Video Games, Tech Companies, Automobile Companies, When one thing hits they all copy. Welcome to the real world.

2. Google: Samsung doesn't make up nearly half of all android sales. Most are from cheap phones that sell in mass to 2nd & 3rd world country. Again, welcome to the real world.

Dell: They still supply A LOT of the business industry and their servers are probably the most used within retail stores, family businesses, and small - mid sized companies. They're not going anywhere.

eBay: Again, you're completely wrong. They don't sell knock offs, this is eCommerce, there a lot of stores pushing all available options eBay, Amazon, New Egg, etc etc. Again, welcome to the real world. Theres tons of customers and my customer's customers that set up eBay stores. Whether their boutique shops, completely eCommerce, eCommerce Portal, or if its a manufacturer that sells B2C.

NewEgg: Ecommerce, some of those prices are not directly from New Egg, again it seems like you have no idea of online sales. Even for an average consumer, haven't you shopped online? on Amazon?. Windows fan boys? How else are you going to make a gaming rig? You're going to need windows. And a lot of tech savvy owners or guys with their own IT department use NewEgg to create their own servers. Lastly, people work, I'm not going to a computer shop or retail store to go looking for parts in which they probably and won't have.

Retails stores have nothing, they're empty and they don't get restocked as well as they did 5-8 years ago. Not to mention retail stores are usually marked up more then in websites. (unless you buy directly from the manufacturer, which is then higher (to keep their wholesale customers happy)

Again, you seem to be in that "I'm 17-20 years old" I know everything stage, but you really don't know anything.

This is straight business, this is something they HAVE to do. They have to protect their own interests, similar to how nations protect their own interests.

That was hardly the point..

I was just commenting on your linked image, pointing out that it didn't demonstrate what you said it did. That's all.

question : is he correct in his assertions though? Cause there are a lot of apologists on MR.

So its okay to label someone a hater..... but incorrect to point out an apologist?

Hater and apologists are both as bad as each other.

my concern is that anyone who voices a structured and objective point of view, are quickly labelled a hater.....you can respect a company and be a fan without kissing its ass.
Good Lord a reasonable point of view. Where are your biases, why aren't you frothing at the mouth? ;)

Well that's the only mobile platform that's actually doing some innovating these days. WP doesn't get as much attention and and props as it should.
The flat look of iOS came from there, so someone was paying attention.

You obviously do not understand the quote. Best of luck to you. It is clear that apple has hurt you greatly. I hope you can find peace.
Yeah, they killed my kittehs and ate my dog.*

These threads are always fascinating to me because it demonstrates where people differentiate, or better, rationalize where company 'A' is in the wrong where company 'B' was doing something completely OK and not related at all. When in reality it's splitting hairs.

Lets get it right shall we? Mac OS was derived from Xerox PARC. Windows was "derived" from Mac OS. At least Apple paid for the technology they used. Xerox dumped the PARC project before Apple released the Mac. Their loss.

The Mac OS was derived from Xerox PARC, but Apple never paid Xerox for the 1979 visit or a license. Nor did they ever claim in court that they did.

It was the opposite situation. Xerox, like other companies, bought some Apple stock back when Apple was a startup seeking angel investors.

Google - Creator of the Android operating system. Immediately threw away their designs for the "Google phone" and Android OS after then CEO and Apple board member, Eric Schmidt, saw the designs for the first iPhone and iOS.

Others claim the Android developers were shocked when the iPhone was shown off. Which is it?

In fact, Jobs never claimed that Schmidt leaked anything. That idea is an internet fabrication, and one that makes no sense. If he had done anything like that, Apple would not have kept him on the board for years after the iPhone came out.

When Jobs said that Android was a "stolen" system, he was speaking when Android turned on multi-touch years later.

Of course, Jobs avoided attacking WebOS (which actually was led by ex-Apple people) for using the same known concepts, because he feared getting nailed for violating Palm's own smartphone patent portfolio.

Source? Unlike Samsung and other sleazy companies Apple doesn't inflate its stats by pumping the supply chain with unwanted product so they can publish a bogus number of "shipped" products. Apple is widely recognized for their operational efficiency. They don't have stale inventory just lying around.

Apple claims sales into the channel like everyone else, even if millions of those are still unsold to end users.

This unsold Apple retailer inventory grows by millions every year:
channel_inventory_rise.png

According to Apple, their retailers had over 15 million iPhones sitting in channel inventory before the iPhone 6 went on sale. Apple had already claimed sales figures on those, of course.

You can debate things without having to make up fake facts.

But, HATERAID!

Im kidding.

It is entirely possible to actually enjoy many of their products, and think they do make quality stuff,

But hate their business practices.

people need to get over this concept of "Zero-SUM" game. not everything is a zero sum game. business is not war. its entirely possible, and in fact, best if there is no "zero-sum" game.

whenever I hear people in here spouting "APPLE WON THE WAR GET OVER IT!" i have to ask... what war? this is business, not war. there's no life to lose. everyone can be a winner. there can be success even if you're not the #1. the world does NOT revolve around always being #1

it's like too many of you watched the movie "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and took his father's quotes as literal fact and a lesson in life.

"If you're not first, you're last". this mentality is absolutely stupid. if you believe this, You're an idiot.

Well, that would stuff Apple, I mean if no one inovates with software interface solutions, Apple will have no one to copy....

And before anyone goes nuclear, Apple DOES COPY interface ideas from others, its last iOS and OSX event proved that, it ripped slide to unlock from someone else. If you don't accept that then you are living in denial.

I was going to protest against the biases in this thread by using my windows phone tomorrow..... But I have a genius appointment for my iPhone tomorrow though I might be frothing at the mouth if I'm told there is nothing wrong with it again and the random freezing is a feature not yet stolen by Samsung ;)

Well put. People need to also understand that by having competition, they get a better product. I wish that each year someone lifts the bar and creates and better phone than the iPhone, this pushes apple to make an even better product which we all benefit from.

If you are number one, it's only downhill......

Love Talladega nights :)

I don't understand why so many here support Apple's moves to stifle competition, while also celebrating the massive profit margins. TVs used to be a luxury investment that many could not afford. It wasn't until the Asian companies produced high quality, lower cost "copies" that TVs really hit their stride. What happened? We got more choice... The American RCA TVs were still high quality, but the price came down to compete with Sony, etc.

Then we saw the same thing when Sony, Sharp, etc. were pushed by Korean brands like LG, and full circle back to the USA with Vizio - all copying off of each other to the benefit of the consumer. What would have happened if the first flat screen manufacturer held all the rights to that design and prevented all the others from adopting it?

I own a lot of Apple products, but I want all these companies to copy and refine so Apple keeps getting better, the competition keeps getting better, and costs remain in check because of choice.

and you know what the end result of all that competition was?

new products. new features to differentiate, then copy, then so on and so forth, till the point where we have 4k HD 3D TV's and each company tries "one upping" eachother with better, fancier, and more impressive displays.

Competition is amazing isn't it?

We aren't supporting the end of competition. We are just asking that Samsung and all those other companies stop ripping Apple off. There's a difference between healthy competition and what Samsung and that Chinese company (Xiaomi or whatever) do.

Good thing no one copied the Ford Model T, or the windshield wipers or the seat belts.. or.. nvm
