How does this thing even spread?

A friend got a message in Facebook Messenger app, she says she just went in the discussion to ask what it is, and the message spread to all her friends in a form of a Facebook message.

She says she used her iPhone and not a computer. Her friend says she used an iPhone too. I thought that iOS was as airtight as they get. How does this thing spread?

The Facebook app asks for permission to use your Contacts when first installed. Easy for whatever it is to then scan your contacts and send mail out. Particularly when contacts that are specific to Facebook are so noted in their contact info.

Still weird that the Facebook messenger app would allow for something like that though. On the other hand I can’t really know exactly what she did, but only what she said she did.

I revoked access to my contacts by the app just in case. lol

This is good food for thought by the way when installing apps, to actually take the time and think what you really need the app to have access to.
