Facebook today released an updated Facebook Messenger app that has been redesigned for iOS 7 with a simpler interface and a cleaner look for easier navigation.

The update also includes messaging via phone number, allowing users to send messages to people outside of Facebook, and there is a new icon that indicates which friends are logged into the app.

What's New:
A completely new design, updated for iOS 7.

Find more people to message: Now you can text your phone contacts even if you're not Facebook friends. And it's easy to add new contacts-just enter a phone number.
Facebook Messenger is a free app that can be downloaded from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Does it still run in the background as a VoIP app and kill battery life? I'd like to use the messenger app but not at the expense of battery.

This is annoying every time you open and switch the app, especially since I don't want to use notifications. I count this as a bug rather than a feature:

In before privacy-paranoids, oh I'm late.

Previous versions of the Facebook app uploaded users contact without permission. This time at least they know to ask... Of course since iOS now requires them to ask before uploading.

Now they just need to completely overhaul the unusable Pages app.

FINALLY! Been waiting for FB Messenger iOS 7 update since iOS 7 came out. I'm liking it so far, and I really like how the main Facebook app takes you to the Messenger app now!

The facebook app was also updated and it now opens Messenger instead of showing you ugly chat heads.

Has anyone found out how you could add a favourite in the updated messenger? I've been trying to find it but to no luck
So far I could only do it within the Facebook app and not the messenger app.

they took out the "Facebook" button to switch to the app... NOOO
You could go into a conversation with someone, click on the information/dots icon on the top right, and select the Timeline icon in the menu which will take you to their timeline in the Facebook app--so not the fastest way to do it, nor will it get you to the newsfeed or something like that directly, but a way to get to the Facebook app from the Messenger app.

Does it actually do that? Does it drain the battery in a noticeable way? I don't think I remove it from the list of recent apps (multitasking) all that much, but can't say I've noticed any battery difference on days when I would have it there for a good part of the day vs. days when I don't really use the app (and it's not in the background).

So you are talking about Facebook rather than Facebook Messenger?

I use Facebook even more often than Facebook Messenger and definitely haven't noticed any noticeable battery hit on days when I use it vs. days that I don't (or when I close out all apps somewhat often, for one reason or another).

I'm sure that for some there is some drain from one or some of the Facebook apps, but doesn't seem like that's the case for everyone (or even perhaps most).

It's great that they finally did some integration of the two apps. I hate seeing duplicate notifications for facebook messages.

Note the bottom addition. He said it's the same for Messenger as well. I just wonder if they stopped it for 3.0
