Nice of them to do this, but I cut the cord yesterday :)
I used to say that I wanted to keep Facebook at least to keep up with friends and family. Now I feel friends and family don't even post useful "good to know" type of things... almost like everyone is self-censoring and just using it as a way to curate an image... or I guess to just complain. But now my sticking point is that I find out about local businesses and local events through Facebook. And Facebook groups are sometimes the only way a lot of people interact online locally. So maybe the solution for now is essentially unfriending everyone and using it just as a feed of what's happening.

Forcing us to have the whole Facebook app just for chat WOULD be ridiculous.
I remember how bloated it was back in the days.

With just the Messenger app, I can uninstall the Facebook app and save time I would have wasted in their app otherwise. And the more you look at the news feed, even if you don't interact, the more data they collect about you.
It's just an added step in what's already an app dedicated to propagating your data in every way. First, they consume all of your phone contacts, yes it can be turned off but you have to go in and explicitly opt out for this not to happen. For the average user it's confusing and blurs the lines between phone contacts and FB friends, in many ways it's like a trojan horse. If you want to talk about collecting data, we're basically handing it ALL over to them on a silver platter.

This. Facebook does what they can to keep you from shutting off (requiring an account to view others, using facebook to log in to websites, Gaming / VR, etc.) and they completely overlooked that fact that actual content is disappearing.

I feel like they are trying fix it, but they just don't understand their own platform well enough. If you read r/facebook you will see the most bizarre stories of people reporting hate speech that Facebook doesn't consider a violation and selfies with kids that are taken down because someone found the image offensive.

Facebook is dying because of it's user base.

I agree. I am disappointed that they discontinued the Groups app.

I don't care about Facebook but I'd be glad if Apple implemented a guest mode in iOS and iPadOS. I only seldom give my phone to somebody else, but being protected in those cases would be great.

Why not also add encryption, so I know that FB and Marky boy aren’t also reading my messages?
Also, Apple should add this for all apps with user input. you can already do it with some notes, you should also be able to do it with photo albums, iMessages, voicemails, Emails, etc.
On top of that, add the option for DND while using AirPlay, or just in general, even when the phone or iPad is in usage. The mac already has this, but on iOS and iPadOS, DND is useless when the device is in use.
Also, I mirror my iPad to my TV a lot, and I live with an entire family, so I’ve had to turn off banner notifications for apps like Twitter, because I have no idea what’s going to pop up randomly

You get what you pay for, although with FB it's more akin to negative interest rates.

How about a restricted guest account for the device, instead? You could only make a call and text, without access to any of the owner's data.

Or maybe a better comparison, it's like suggesting Microsoft Teams or Microsoft Outlook should be broken into separate apps.
They are two separate apps. Email and messaging/chat have been and are generally treated as separate things, and in case of Facebook their main app and their messenger services are similarly treated that way.

Makes me think that IPadOS not having profiles is ridiculous. This has been a standard feature on “computers” for decades. I thought iPad is your next computer Apple?

I meant that Teams itself should be split into 3 apps, Chat, Forum, and Calendar, and that Outlook should be split into 3 apps, Email, Calendar, and Contacts.

And I meant that both of those are bad suggestions. But I do wonder if the Email should be moved from Outlook into Teams and that Outlook should be done away with.

Well, you can make that argument, since that's exactly what Apple did: it has Mail, Calendar (née iCal), Contacts (née Address Book). Microsoft went the opposite route — it had Mail and Schedule+, and replaced those by Outlook.

Either approach has benefits and downsides. Splitting Outlook would let each individual component shine. But it would also lose some nice integration. Same goes for Teams. I find Adium to be a much better text messenger, for the most part, than Teams. But Teams is pretty great* when you want to work in, y'know, teams.

(A way to think about it: look at the menu bar. What does it represent? Where is the focus? For Outlook for Mac, the answer is: they couldn't find a good focus, so they instead opted to change the menu bar depending on which section of the app you're in.)

*) Well, it's pretty bad at integration with the Mac, and I have a lot of complaints for even basic things like scrolling through the message history. But what it does well, it does quite well.

I wrote this into one of my Apps, which has messages and private details, years ago.
At first it was just a PIN code screen on launch but then I added TouchID, and later FaceID, support which is especially useful since I'd regularly get support emails from users saying "I've forgotten my PIN, can you tell me how to unlock it?"
Only now FB? This feels like PR and pseudo-privacy.

That's cool for those who still trust Facebook with their data, but not their friends or family members that they give access to their device. This isn't a new feature so it is odd for them to announce it as though it is an achievement. It is standard practice with messaging apps... except for those from Google, Facebook, and Apple. 👀

But seriously, this feature just needs to be a OS wide feature. I should be able to enable apps individually to open on with FaceID/TouchID. Apple needs to step it up. And this is obviously a separate feature than using it for unlocking device. If I want quick access to non privacy centric apps, I can have it disabled for them. If it is my Messages, Mail, Photos, I want them locked behind a second FaceID or TouchID scan. That should be a toggle. Many apps do this. Outlook, Brave Browser, Ulysses... but I don't want to rely on 3rd party devs to do this. Apple is supposed to be the kings of privacy, this should have been a feature long ago.

Why is FB behaving like Lastpss or other password mangers where is a valid reason to use TouchID, or FaceID first to gain access?..

This is a social site.. what info do you have to protect? The only reason would be to protect change to setting/account related.

What... I don't use Facebook anymore, but I can easily see the type of information people would not want others to access. Private albums. Private chat conversations. Access to financial payments because that is a thing. Much more than basic settings. Just because you don't use the app for those purposes, that doesn't mean a **** ton of people do... I mean, that is exactly how FB harvests data.

It's not collecting or storing other passwords or anything like that. Simply protected access to the Messenger app in case someone doesn't want someone else to be able to see their conversations, for example. It's a privacy feature basically.

And if it does store face or fingerprint data it’s a bug, judging by more recent articles.
In the case of how this is done via Touch ID or Face ID it seems that there isn't something meaningful for Facebook to obtain or store about those given that it's all taken care of on the device through what iOS offers in relation to that.
