FaceBook Messenger Red Notification Icon Bugs Me; How you Rid w/o Actually Reading?

I have a family friend that constantly sends me dumb memes within the Facebook messenger app. I can’t unfriend or block him but I would like to be able to not receive the annoying red notification icon on my iPhone home screen. How am I do this without actually showing that I’m reading the messages? It seems to be the only way.

But is that the solution? Ideally I still want to know he sent it so when I see the family on the weekend I can be like ‘hey I saw your message!’

You will always see new messages when you use messenger. All you block are notifications triggered because of him sending memes to your chat.

Do you just want to eliminate the Facebook Notification Badge completely? You can do so in Settings.

1. Go to Settings > Notifications.
2. Select Facebook under Notification Style.
3. Set Badges to off (slider to left)

You can also mess with a bunch of other notification settings. Personally, I just allow notifications for calls, calendar events, reminders, text messages and e-mail. Do all the meaningless apps really need to bother you with badges and clog up the notification center?
