Have we not learned the hard way that Facebook should not be used for news? It's going to tell people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear.

I joined FaceBook to keep in touch with my family and friends, who are scattered to the four corners of the planet. If I want news, or videos of dogs and cats dancing together dressed in tutus, I can find that outside of FB. FB took an elegant idea and ruined it with a lack of vision, a lack of focus, a junky GUI, and greed. It is becoming as crass as tabloid newspapers.
Exactly this.
It stopped being fun when it was no longer about people going on holiday, sharing family updates, etc.
All of a sudden everyone needed to show their political opinion, Facebook decided that we needed to buy other people’s junk from the neighbourhood, then decided it was right to get into bed with far right extremists and to share news from sources which sympathise with them or subtly back them up.

It was just greed.

From the screenshots and list of 'national' media organisations, this is all English news and England focused. Not that it matters all that much, Facebook is on its last legs.
All those publications are fairly aligned in their views, as most news is opinion these days Facebook news will effectively push a one sided narrative purported to come from reputable sources effectively saying the same thing. If they all said night is day and water is dry then a significant number of Facebook users won’t see any other press stating the correct facts and lots if Facebook users will be going around believing in nonsense siting the uncredible sources like the guardian, channel 4 or sky news.

this will be worse than the Cambridge analytical scandal and should finally bring Facebook into national governmental regulation.

If the guardian publishes a story they must apologise for then Facebook should then have to notify each person who saw that story and ensure each person clicks to acknowledge the problem with the original story.

Becoming? LOL... I jumped ship 6+ years ago and it was an absolute s***show then. There are other and better ways of staying in touch with distant family and friends than legitimizing / justifying toxic social media corps.

😂 facebook is on its last legs? based on what. they are up 100 dollars up per share YTD.

You're not wrong, there are still too many lemmings in the world available for monetization. At least... if nothing else... Facebook is no longer immune to criticism among the tech literate. It wasn't that long ago that one would have been excoriated and labeled a conspiracy theorist Luddite for uttering even the slightest criticism of Facebook. Now when the topic comes up (most) FacebookPeople just start making excuses for why they're still 'on Facebook' as they blithely scroll through their news feed and avoid eye contact. It's not unlike standing outside of a hospital trying to explain to a patient smoking a cigarette why they should stop smoking cigarettes.

Another annoying button across the bottom you won’t be able to remove/turn off. Not to mention the the annoying red dots three times a day you’ll have to dig to find to make them disappear which are just to keep you engaged with their app and make them more money.

All of which will get worse once ad tracking is no longer allowed...
This is exactly why I hate it! I hate those unviewed notification dots, so it almost forces my hand. Most of the news is sensationalistic garbage too, just fanning the flames of outrage. Fortunately I just roll my eyes and move on, but it is obnoxious. I pity those who fall into these news traps...no wonder people have lost their minds.

Facebook is the worlds largest advertising company. By design everything it does is aimed at keeping you online.
Their news feed will only entrench and divide users who swim in their own echo chambers.
no doubt that politics plus social media will create civil unrest on a scale hitherto unseen in otherwise stable countries.

I actually really like the Facebook News tab. Lots of different articles covering various sides of an issue, and their choice of publications, and the associated curation of said publications, results in unbiased coverage to the extent that modern news media naturally permits.

It's not even about the News, it's about knowing what news we're interested in. That's what they want to know. To shove more targeted ads in our brains.

If there is something they don't want you to see, you won't see it. Not in their app. That being said, you won't see any Anti-Facebook news.

Unbiased? Remember, if you don't pay for it, you're the product. All they want is your constant attention. Like most "free" online businesses.

Facebook and its subsidiaries should be banned from discussing in the news like Nazi propaganda. All other evil spy corporates...you are next!

Why does this "feature" make me utterly depressed? I shouldn't care because I don't use Facebook, but their evil tentacles are stretching into yet more parts of our lives where they shouldn't be. Part of me wants to think that this will cut down on the spread of disinformation, but most of me just thinks that Facebook should climb back in its box and go away.
Disinformation gets spread by mainstream news even better than FB so unfortunately it won't matter.
