The research could enable Facebook to read users' encrypted WhatsApp messages and then use that information for targeted advertising.

For targeted advertising where, within WhatsApp itself? 🤔
Everywhere. Once they can associate your WhatsApp ID with specific content, it’s part of their data about you forever. You’ll likely be targeted across FB properties like WA, FB, Instagram, etc.

It’s almost admirable in a creepy sort of way how Facebook gives zero bleeps about showing the lengths they will go to to keep getting users’ personal info to profit from.

Ha ha.. Why are people still using products made by Facebook at this point? I deleted Twitter and Facebook this year and I don't miss it, I don't need it but I feel so free.

if data can be extracted from an encrypted communication without knowing the actual cyphers/keys, it would be the actual proof for the encryption in question not being secure enough.

how about a targeted middle finger to facebook...
I love being able to use quotes or bits of songs will little to no modification.

From the original Matrix movie, modified to match the article contents:

Agent Zuck: We're willing to wipe the slate clean and give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing your encrypted content to us.
Neo: Yeah. Wow, that sounds like a really good deal. But I think I've got a better one. How about I give you the finger (raises his middle finger) and you stay away my encrypted content?

allow companies to read information from encrypted sets of data while also preserving privacy to protect against cybersecurity threats

Oh the irony in that statement.

At least FB revealed their encryption isn't all that secure.

Of course they are...

Which is why you should read "End-to-end encrypted" in WhatsApp as "Trust me, bro!".

I don’t use Facebook, but yes, Instagram could start feeding me more targeted stuff.

I'll be generous and say this is Facebook signalling to the world that the Secret Services are instructing them behind the scenes to compromise their own encryption, all in the hope that the Secret Services will back down a bit. We will come to see that, in fact, Facebook was, after all, the protector of our privacy, not the enemy. After all, Zuckerberg has one of those faces you can just trust, right? He's just misunderstood, ok?

Agree with all of it. That said, I'm pretty sure Apple didn't lock down iCloud because of the pressure of the U.S. government - guessing Apple Exec's made a calculated guess that if they locked it down, there would be a high risk of lawmakers mandating backdoors. Users can make local encrypted backups via Apple tools so they have that option.

Stepping back a bit, if you're relying on private companies to protect your privacy (as opposed to your government) you've already lost...its only a matter of time and the right leader to blow those private barriers away.

I agree completely too about the why of Apple not locking it down.

Perhaps I misunderstood the 2nd paragraph, but I wouldn't rely on companies or any government to protect privacy. A government probably being worse given their ability and desire to know everything about everyone. Governments would only protect privacy from everyone except them, and as long as there is a back door somewhere, eventually it will be available everywhere.

Facebook IS the cybersecurity threat. Really, this type of behavior is one of the threats. Even if Facebook could use homomorphic encryption and people were buying that it was a reasonable thing, it would mean that there was information leakage and anyone who cares about privacy should care about this because it means that it is not encrypted.

****...ing charge a subscription!!! Not everything needs to be free. My GOD, why they assembly a team to snitch our private data instead of follow course with Netflix, Spotify...Can't believe they will be making more money from AD's than paying users. WhatsApp is a necessity right now, you can't opt out without losing the posibility to talk to customers or friends.

This is why the free ad-supported model is terrible a lot of the time. On Facebook you're not the customer. The customers are the advertisers. You're the product, and that includes all data that can be sapped from you that advertisers are willing to pay for.

And everywhere in the Facebook ecosystem.
