But I get what you are saying. Monsanto didn’t kill anybody, mostly the cancer did. Monsanto just did help the cancer.

And now when Bayer and Monsanto is merged, let’s add this as a bonus

So, back to the post, yes Facebook is evil, but in a different sort of way.

There is zero evidence of your claims. Literally zero. Glyphosate, like many other chemicals, can cause cancer at incredibly high doses, but not what you find in food. THE DOSAGE MAKES THE POISON.

Maybe text them the photos and videos. Call them. You know instead of giving facebook the rights to your personal pictures and videos.

I appreciate your suggestions but it's just not the same. Not even in the same ballpark. With Facebook it keeps your posts and photos forever. I can browse my family's memories any time I like. Memories pop up from time to time, reminding us of weddings, parties, lost loved ones.

BTW, Facebook does NOT own the rights to your personal photos and videos. That's a myth.

Edited: some super dumb grammar mistakes

I stopped using Facebook 4 months ago and I don’t miss it at all. Another day, I logged in for 5m minutes and figure out what a waste of time that is. Too much self promotion and people showing off. In the end is not worth it and you’ll feel better.
Add all the scandals FB have been embroiled on, I hope they will becoming the next platform to die.

Reread what you wrote. It’s a little funny with some typos. It might not be legally true that FB owns your pics but if you trust them with that stuff I think you’re far too trusting of some seriously scumbags who have proven on multiple occasions they aren’t trustworthy and I can only imagine the scummy things we will continue to learn about them. If you want the pics to stay available you can do shared albums on iCloud or google photos, share a Dropbox folder, or start your own password protected website to keep shared pictures on. I know it’s less convenient but to me Facebook deserves to go bankrupt. They have lied to and abused their customers far too many times.

It's been almost a month since I deleted my facebook account, and I can honestly say that my life is much better. Best privacy decision I've ever made.

Very different. Some developer(s) at Facebook deliberately made the decision to store these passwords in plain-text, for whatever reason. The root password issue was an oversight, not an intentional decision.

When building web login systems, it's common practice and knowledge to never store a password in plain text... so FB screwed up BIG time here!

Facebook does have not privacy and security in their culture. Companies that don't prioritize privacy and security end up with development team leaders focusing on other objectives and primary infrastructural needs don't get taken care of.

I worked for a company that serviced major players in the international realm, and ran infrastructure necessary for sustaining those business relationships on a shoe string budget. Almost no system redundancy, and several mission critical, internet facing applications, with serious security flaws. We didn't have the leadership focus or budget to do things "right".

Companies tend to achieve what they focus their efforts on. Facebooks focus is obviously not privacy and security.

First, my post highlights ATOM BOMB and AGENT ORANGE. No harm in those 2? Zero evidence? If your answer is yes, then wow.

Outside of those 2, just for fun, check “Aspartame, sweet misery”

But this is getting very far away from the original Facebook post.

While many are saying "is anyone surprised" I actually am at this.

This is one of the largest corporations in the world, whose sole business is its internet applications, and they ignored one of the most basic security expectations of hashing a password?

That is absolutely surprising and shameful and there is no excuse from them that is acceptable.

I think the article cited some sort of capture logging -- so that suggests that the password was logged at the point of input as part of some lazy and very verbose tracing intended for development purposes I suspect -- rather than stored persistently for authentication purposes, which as you correctly point out, no one does (well no one that isn't terrifyingly ignorant). Nothing wrong with that tracing for internal uses if they had simply replaced the actual password with some literal text ***** or similar to represent the nature of the input.

What do people recommend as a secure cross-platform alternative to WhatsApp?
I have seen people recommend signal.
There are also recommendations for Telegram, but I am a little not sure about the open source thing.
I switched over to Line and still trying to figure it out.

The powers-that-be are still busy busting Apple over monopolistic practices. It will take years. The Facebook crimes are very minor in comparison.

so abusing the service is less of an issue than "so called" actual issues ?

Good to see no one cares about personal info these days enough. :p

Why dont we get up in arms when banking staff can access our accounts without our passwords? #justsaying

I'm surprised that *you're* surprised. These tech companies are run by (mainly) young people who have zero regard for privacy and accuracy. This is their MO; or, if you prefer, it's in their DNA. Almost every day, we read of some data breach that was the result of lazy practices or a non-existent work ethic. Facebook was never designed as a privacy platform, and retrofitting attempts to address that have been incredible failures. Again, that's because it was never made for that, and the entire culture is about theft and commoditizing peoples' information under the guise of sharing memories or keeping in touch with family.

Not even the fact that hardly any of this matters to millions of users who just shrug it off is shocking. But techie boy malfeasance still remains far worse.

Because they have professional standards about when that takes place. They're not accessing it in the way that irresponsible tech companies and their malicious techie boy employees do.

LOL, sorry about the typos, I was multitasking, which I'm obviously terrible at. And you're right. Facebook -- the company -- is truly awful. Which is why I am searching for an alternative that provides a similar user experience and features, but without the evil.

Thanks for your suggestions though! A lot of my family uses Android. Never researched if iCloud shared albums work over a web browser with non-Apple folks. Can't do Google. They're just as bad if not worse than Facebook. I don't use any Google products whatsoever because like Tim Apple said, with them, YOU'RE the product. "Free" is a lie.

This is why you don't use the same password for multiple accounts. For example if I used the same email and password for my Facebook account as my Apple account then both would be compromised. This is one common way people get their accounts "hacked" then they'll blame whatever account for this. LOL

You know, if Facebook actually spent some time simplifying the interface so it doesn't take a minute to load, and if they focused on obvious fundamentals like privacy and security, then I might no longer think of Facebook as a POS. Apple should be looking at Facebook and understanding what happens to brand loyalty if the quality of the experience is de-emphasized in favor on focusing on profiteering.

Facebook's business model is like Google. They make money selling your personal information. It's not possible for them to focus on privacy and make money. Apple doesn't make money by selling your information thus they have to charge more for their products. People want cheap products but then complain when there's a price to pay in a different way. The same is true for most smart TVs. They're sold cheaper but the manufacturers make extra money by selling your data AKA what you're watching on TV.

I did, a while back. Then I lost some level of contact with far away family....

I sadly came back.

But, since I use 1password (all my passwords are unique and long/complicated) and 2FA, I'm not worried about "that"... but there are still lots to worry about

This is the issue that keeps a lot of users on Facebook who would probably leave. In addition to the security issues, Facebook presents a god-awful user experience. A thing to do might be to set up a blog or a simple website for all family members to use. The entire thing could be pw protected. Could be much more pleasant than Facebook & much more personalized, with no strangers from who knows were looking in. I'm hashing this idea over for my family.

I will never understand why people have such passionate hatred towards Facebook. I mean, for any given Facebook scandal, most internet/data companies are doing FAR worse. Like the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Listening to the furious press articles, you could be forgiven for thinking it was some new EVIL thing Facebook invented. In reality, tons of shady internet companies sell and buy user data as well.

It must kill these people to realize that Facebook's business is doing better than ever, they're basically printing money and more people are using Facebook/IG/Whatsapp than ever before.

The fact of the matter is that Facebook uses user data to sell you more relevant ads and features. Wow. SO EVIL.

Far worse than like the Cambridge Analytica scandal? You realize Facebook was involved in that right? You're correct that Facebook isn't doing anything that other corporations like Google are doing but that doesn't make it "right". Some people don't have a problem with their entire personal life being sold for advertisement purposes and that should be their choice. I agree that when you use Facebook you also agree to whatever they do with your data but I also think that should be made very clear. If my data is going to be sold for whatever I should be told in plain English what data, to whom and for what. When I say plain English I don't mean a TOS drafted by a lawyer that's pages of legal mumbo jumbo.

I wish someone would offer a Facebook alternative. A simple scrolling timeline shouldn't be hard to create. The problem is if anyone made it how would they make money? Facebook makes money by selling your personal information. If they did the same then it would be no different. I still have Facebook but post very minimal personal information. I still get the pop up asking for my phone number. No thanks I get enough spam calls as it is without Facebook selling it to more people.
