Not sure what all the fuss about having to use two apps. I think this is a non issue, the two apps are hardly going to affect your storage.

All this complaining! People here don't have any vision.

Everyone claims to love Jobs and his philosophy around here but any time there's a change of the norm people go up in arms.

Splitting the app into two leads to more efficiency, simplicity, and focused use. These are all the traits that Apple and not to mention the iPhone were founded upon.

I use both apps and use them for completely separate reasons. It's a nice divide. Glad to see facebook taking initiative and making the standard app (which is insanely bloated) leaner, more efficient and thus faster.

Can't tell if serious or joking.

All I know is I'm glad that I don't depend on FB to communicate directly with people.

OMG you are right, you use the apps for two different reasons!!!

By the way you think, there should be and app for likes, another for viewing pictures, another one for uploading photos.... just plain stupid.

Dumb. I don't want two apps.

Neither do I, but I only want the Messenger app. Lucky for me, unfortunate for you.

But what I REALLY want is for Apple to give Messages on iOS the power of Messages/iChat on Mac. Messages on my Mac controls my two AIM accounts, my iMessage, my three Facebook accounts, and my two Google accounts. I don't have to visit any of those sites to get messages. It's wonderful.

I prefer having dedicated apps. At the moment when I receive a message I have a notification stuck on both the Facebook and Messenger app which plays on my OCD terribly.
Not a massive fan of Facebook but am in no way anti. I've tried a lot of messaging apps over the years and Facebook has worked best for me.

It makes it harder to send stuff from Facebook to people on Facebook Messenger. You've gotta keep switching apps. I only like having them separate because I only use Messenger.

already stopped using Facebook, only people who do are either robots or kids who don't know any better.

facebook is a pile of junk, designed to funnel you adverts and spam and allow stalkers to basically intrude on your life.

This is another attempt to try and get you to use an another app to DOUBLE THEIR AD revenue. Two apps, whole new set of ads and sales prices. This is not a legit reason to split them apart.

DO NOT TRUST facebook.

Having two apps doesn't help with ad revenue. Anyway, no matter how much you hate Facebook, lots of people rely on it for messaging, so it's useful to have Facebook Messenger set up just so people can contact you. And this thing about stalking and intruding on your life is nonsense unless you put all your information on your profile.

I really didn't understand why they did this. You have to open the App Store link to bypass it every time you want to read your messages but I think they'll cut this off soon and will make you download the app (or it could've done so already, since I caved in and downloaded the app).

I'm fairly certain this is some of the oldest news I have ever read on this site, this was implemented a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, please do some research next time

No it wasn't. Please post the date that you claim it was implemented. I can still message from within the app, even though I prefer the messenger app.

Long post.. skip to the bottom for the TL;DR :-D

haven't they already done this? and works perfectly btw...

Translation.... No one used our messaging app because they'd use it within the FB app. So know we'll force you to use it.

I never saw the need for two apps that do the same thing. This story is news to me and I think the move is pretty stupid. IMO

At this point, why not make another app to post pics to your wall? Lol

It was forced on Europe users a while back.
I think that's where most of the "200 million monthly users" comes from.
Frustrates me that companies can put out figures like that, when the bulk of it is because there was no other choice that people saw. When there's no other choice, people will be "motivated" to use it...

The above few quotes sum up why it's not a great idea (for me, at least) right now.
It could work well, but doesn't.
Whenever I switch from the facebook app to another, the facebook app closes in the background and reloads when I go back to it - 9 times out of 10, it's not in the same place I left it. So my issue with having to switch to another app whenever I get a message, is that. Whenever I tap to send someone a message from facebook, I'm taken away, then come back to the app having closed in the background losing where I was up to. I then give up, and just close facebook not bothering.

I can't be looking at something on my "Most Recent" (because newsfeed is just useless) and message somebody at the same time, talking about what I'm looking at.
The only way that is doable, is with chat-heads (which I loved). It's great on Android, because chat-heads are everywhere, so you'd never actually be taken fully away from the Facebook app.

I understand the Messenger app, and would be great if all I ever did was message people, but I usually only message people whilst I'm using Facebook. Now I'll just be ignoring messages until I go on the Facebook website. Possibly just deleting the Facebook app completely, and just sticking to the Safari version, one tab for messages, one tab for newsfeed. Switching between the two nicely, without the other reloading.
Text message alerts also come through quite quickly, so I'm not missing out on any notifications.

Even forcing the iPad app is just bonkers. It's perfect for doing more than one thing, browsing facebook and messaging, because there's so much screen space to do so. Switching apps there makes less sense.

Messenger is good for those who want to just message - not good for those who want to message and browse Facebook at the same time.

TLDR:
Clunky in it's current state. Not smooth. Needs improving. Too many bugs.
I may come back to Facebook for iOS and Messenger if Facebook take advantage of quick reply or extensions on iOS 8 - only then will it work for me, as I could reply to the notification whilst staying on the Facebook app.

For info: Facebook crashes happened on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3, and continued to happen on my 5S and iPad air. I've been through re-installs, restores, as new, the usual. No joy.

Makes sense because IMO the Messenger app is way better than the in-app messenger.

Exactly. Plus you don't have all the overhead and the distractions of your News Feed when you simply want to reply to a message.

I'm glad there are two apps.

It's a Europe thing. I was in the same boat as the other guy, can only message from the Facebook Messenger app, and trying to do so in the Facebook app tells me I need to install Messenger, or takes me straight to it if I have it installed.
I cannot send, reply, chat, from the Facebook app and haven't been able to for quite some time.

I think this is only true in Europe (according to the article). I'm still able to send messages via the Facebook app.

every couple months i install the iOS app again. And within days, I delete it for being a slow, bloating, non-functioning piece. i just use the mobile site. if they get to a point where you cant get at messages even in the mobile app, then i'll stop using FB all together

now i no longer even need to bother. i'll simply never install it again.

I like Facebook Messenger. It’s a lot quicker and simpler in structure and I find myself using it more than the main app. Sometimes I even wonder why I still have the latter, since nearly all of my Facebook activity is on the messenger.

The Messenger app itself is very good, in my opinion. It’s lightweight, quick, has a simple design.

I'm not sure you read the article correctly since this has not been implemented yet in this country. Both apps exist but messenger is still a feature of the main Facebook app at this point.

I already have bugger all space on my 8GB iPhone, now I have to download an extra app just to do what the current app was already doing perfectly well??

Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

I give it a year to 18 months before they pull it back to a single app.

This is old news that they are removing it.. It was announced back in April.

they should remove the main app altogether and rewrite it
Bingo. Most of the complaining comes from those who don't use Facebook and/or Messenger much or even flat out say they hate Facebook to one degree or another. None of this is aimed at them really, and Facebook doesn't really cater to this kind of user base (that barely uses the product or flat out hates it). For those that actually do use it and would be affected, more than likely the vast majority won't care much, and some will even like it more as they can separate conversations from just plain Facebook browsing which is a separate/different action anyway.

All of that play important roles behind it all.
