People don't realize how many stupid, pointless, updates Facebook keeps them from not seeing each day.

So true, didn't realised this when I permanently deleted my accound a while back and got stuck with stupid, pointless updates from the likes of Wikipedia and other constructive time-consuming apps.

Facebook constantly announces things like this that are "future" features - and then they never happen. I'll believe it when I see it.

I get more advertising in my Instagram feed now than I do on Facebook - but they're owned by Facebook, so it's no surprise :/

Facebook wants itself to be an influential news media instead of a social media. Since about 4-5 years ago,
Yep, but for me, I opted to walk away from facebook. I've deactivated my account and I'm happy I did.

Here's what I kept seeing on FB that pushed my away.
Media content as mentioned in this news story. I kept seeing crap that didn't mean much to me.
Hate. So much hate, it doesn't matter what the topic, people are just whining, complaining and being misrable.
PRSI content, people go out of their way it seems to complain for and against the establishment. I avoid the PRSI forum here at MacRumors, I do not want to see simiilar content on FB. ** please note I'm avoiding PRSI details here as they're not permitted in the open forums, so please lets not derail this thread ;)
If you ever reply to any of those hate content, and your friend is on the other side of the argument, you will be unfriended on both Facebook and in real life.. that's really terrible.

This is a tremendous idea. Most of my time the last couple of years on FB I’ve spent correcting contacts reposting fake news. Cannot stand it but thankfully I’ve been able to teach a core group of my friends how to spot fake news and what steps to take. My favorite victory was converting a trump supporter after tackling a load of pro trump news they reposted.

I agree there. I've liked the bigger news pages to get....NEWS but now don't bother even wanting to read comments. it's all filled with hate. even the feel good stories, nothing but hate.

I hardly see my friends post, it's sprinkled throughout all the other pages i've liked hours later. Instagram is getting worse. FB still shows stories from 4-5 days ago. Just this morning, i finally saw what the final score post on the College Football National Championship game. that was Monday night! why am i seeing that Friday morning? Twitter is constantly showing my things pages i follow, what they've liked.

So you mean the 2 and 5 item won't be a sponsored posted every time you look anymore? Seriously, facebook is 99% ads, .9% other content you don't want to see, and .1% relevant.
I resolved this issue by going into Settings>Ads and removing every "interest" there, and now I don't get ANY ads at all. There were things there like "You are interested in white (colour) because you clicked an ad that was related to white (colour). Over years this obviously builds up, but I now have ad free FB.

Too little too late Zuck... Facebook is clunkier than iTunes. Glad I abandoned it when it when I did.

Took the words right out of my mouth..

Facebook is just a cesspool. Didn't properly delete, simply deactivated, but haven't been on in months and couldn't care less about it.

They probably mean less content from publishers that go against the SJW/liberal narrative. They'll probably follow Google/Youtube, who have demonitized a lot of content from the right side of the political spectrum... FB should go back to chronological. I don't like seeing a post from 3 days ago, even from my friends, just because FB thought it was less important than their ads.

Seriously. Just make a dumb, chronological list of everything my friends post. That’s it.

At least with Twitter you can fix this with a good client.
Actually you could - painfully - set it up that way but then a few months ago they decided that if you were asking for chronological posts, they would only show you the last 4 or 5 posts. Basically it became useless.
[doublepost=1515783752][/doublepost]Let me guess: numbers of users are dwindling down and Mark Z. is getting scared. So less advertising but then since the whole business model is around ads, the risk is that the stock value will tank. We’ll see!

The average Facebook user would see more than 1,500 updates every day in they served them in chronological order. That's just not an option. Instead they do a wonderful job of figuring out what people want to see and showing more of those updates.

If they continued to show updates in chronological order, you'd see a bunch of garbage updates you don't care about and you'd leave the site. That would hurt their business. They're smarter than that.

works flawlessly on Twitter. i unfollow/mute those that post annoying stuff. right now, i absolutely love my Twitter feed and I don't find myself scrolling extremely fast like I do in Facebook.

absolutely false. i stopped visiting Facebook daily because of this "recommended feed". i've found that they prioritize Facebook posts that contain native video are likely shown and any external video links would be hidden.

MAKE IT CHRONOLOGICAL BY DEFAULT. jfc i don't understand why FB/Twitter feels the need to show things out of order.

With respect...you don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. These advanced algorithms make Facebook the modern equivalent of watching TV, with switching from post to post like channel flipping, showing you relevant content based on you behaviours. They're worth billions and billions of dollars. A chronological timeline by default would actually suck.

If you want, though, you know you *can* make it display chronologically?

You don't represent the majority of users. Just because you take the time to use features like mute doesn't mean everyone else will. In fact, most won't, which is why they don't see it as a solution for the masses.

Marketing fluff from the geniuses at manipulating people, all designed to getting you to spend more time at FB. More time equates to more money in Zucks pocket, and that is the only thing that matters.

you don't represent the majority of users either.
facebook is simply doing non-chronological for profit. not for the user experience.

unfollowing someone on twitter is only a couple of clicks. it's not hard to do on Facebook. this morning, I had to unfollow someone on Facebook because he posted an extremely annoying pro-trump status update (i wasn't in chronological mode either). i'm pretty sure a lot of people have done the same. I have "liked" Bernie Sander's official FB page and have blocked many Trump fan pages, but yet the non-chronological algorithm doesn't even work properly.

oh and you do? why do i keep seeing pro-trump status updates in my non-chronological feed. i have "U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders" official page liked and have blocked many trump pages, yet I keep seeing LOTS of pro-trump status updates. These "advanced algorithms" you're talking about doesn't even work. they prioritize to benefit FB, not to benefit the user experience.

also another problem: i visit FB in the morning, i see a status update of a friend posting a pic of his baby. then i visit FB at night, and I see the baby picture same status update at the top of my feed. why?
i then switch to the chronological order, and at the top, I see a youtube video that I really enjoyed. that youtube link didn't exist in the non-chrono feed. it seems like FB doesn't like status updates with youtube links. again, this is to benefit FB because youtube yanks the user out of Facebook.

i know i can change to chronlogical, but it keeps defaulting to non-chronological. i have the chronological order page bookmarked, but everytime i click the Facebook logo to go home, i forget that i'm in non-chronological order.

You're making it very clear you don't understand how Facebook works.

Yes you like Bernie. But your friends obviously like Trump. And their engagement with posts about him are seen as important to you, because it's what your friends are talking about. Just like Twitter, Facebook shows you more of posts that have seen high engagement.

I could explain more but I don't think you'd accept the facts of how the network works.

but it's not important to me. see how the algorithm isn't working properly?

You're making it very clear you don't understand how Facebook works.

i've actually done some work in this field in a couple of startups. i haven't seen the source code or technical papers of the facebook feed (and I'm guessing you haven't either), but all we know is that facebook's intention to show relevant posts to each user. facebook considers high engaging posts that are somewhat related to my likes (as well as other factors) as relevant. unfortunately that's not always the case. for you, maybe it works fine. for me, it completely breaks down.

judging by the amount of people that liked my original reply, its evident that I'm not the only one that thinks a chronological feed would be better than what's going on now.

Facebook has a LOT of data showing that chronological feed just leads to less time spent on the site. It's a clear indication that people don't like it and that it doesn't provide as good of an experience as some think. Additionally, the number of people that bother changing to that feed is very small, further supporting the fact that it's not all that in demand.

No. Less time on a site doesn't mean people don't like it.

Example: with the chronological feed, I always stop when I encounter a post that I've already seen before because I know that I'm all caught up with everything.

With a non-chronological feed, I spend extra time scrolling past posts I've already seen to dig for new posts. I'm not sure when to stop because for all I know, there could be new posts on the bottom. I stop when I'm interrupted by something else or when I'm no longer interested in searching for new stuff. This sucks because I might miss out on some of the things my friends posted. And I HATE seeing posts I've seen multiple times before.

Of course, less time on site is not good for Facebook (less time on site = less revenue), but it doesn't necessarily mean people hate it.

This. I can't stand when someone I know posted something that I really want to see issue far down in the timeline even though they posted it within the hour.

I used to love using Facebook ++ on my jailbroken phones because it had an option that would display posts in chronological order but that hasn't worked in at least a year.

Less time on the site is a bad thing for Facebook, which is why they work hard to keep people on the site as much as possible. Sorry, but you won't see them making moves to decrease time spent on site.

i've already said this: it benefits Facebook, not the user. i dont know what you're trying to argue about.

plenty of people on here agree that they want chronological feed by default.
