No offense but I don't understand why it was difficult for you. There's this little thing called a phone number where people call them, people have voice-based conversations which are far more personal than just a text message. And OK, I understand that not everyone can call especially if there's time zone differences but you can send text messages instead. And if these people are in foreign countries there's always iMessage which is free to use across borders.

Facebook is a plague, it's a disease. It needs to eradicated. All of humanity will be better for it if Facebook were to die tomorrow.

I don’t do calls. No one in Europe uses iMessage (exaggeration obviously)

In the book 1984 people worried about the government putting listening devices into people's homes, today we welcome them into our homes and even pay for them. The companies that provide these services are laughing all the way to the bank.

This just really made me think: How many devices in my house can listen in on me or watch me?
My comcast remote (microphone)
My surveillance cameras which use a server made by the company
all my computers which all have mics and cameras
my home pod
all my iPads
my iPhone
alexa

It is interesting Mark Zuckenburg covers his computer cameras with black tape, wonder if he also deactivates the microphone?

My employer asked me this week to install WhatsApp on my telephone, it's my personal phone, and was shocked when I refused. It boggles my mind that people still use products associated with Facebook.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I let any of their services near/on my devices.
I said the same thing to the boss a few months ago.
Especially when Continental has forbidden its employees to have Whatsapp on their company issued devices.

FaceBook has become too big to fail.

Elected officials may make public complaints about the practices of the company but there are too many jobs and too much money connected to FaceBook for it to be shut down.

Nice to see a major company actually being punished like a smaller one. Shame Facebook was able to collect over 2 years' worth of the private data of minors before Apple actually stopped them.

I have a Facebook account myself. Like many/most people who use it, I really have no choice. My parents looked at me like I had two heads for having one due to the privacy issues. Then a few years back my grandmother dies and they suddenly need to track down our bitterly estranged nephews to give them their inheritance. The only way to get to them was having me use my Facebook account to track them down. I think also of Leo Laporte, who IIRC has deleted his Facebook account twice now, each time calling upon everyone else to do the same, only to create a new one later when he realizes he can't do without it. At this point Facebook has the same compatibility chokehold on the societies in which it is successful as Windows does, only unlike Windows, there aren't any real alternatives to much of what Facebook does, compatible or otherwise. So IMO I think Facebook has nothing to worry about.

That was a filthy and stealthy attempt to grab _all_ of a users network access and make it accessible to Facebook. They abused an Enterprise account which allows you to install apps that are not reviewed by Apple _on devices belonging to your company_.
Facebook has a long history of asking themselves, "how can we get around these new restrictions - in an agreement we've signed (necessary to be an iOS developer) - in order to continue being creepy." Remember when they were found to be "accidentally" playing audio (with no actual sound) in order to keep the Facebook app running continuously in the background?

This is really the key issue. Facebook's market penetration is so great that avoiding is almost synonymous to giving up a key and integral social utility - like becoming a social outcast and giving up using a telephone.

Don't exaggerate - lots of people have stopped using Facebook and can still communicate online.

You can still go get those pictures. There's really no way to actually get rid of Facebook. They hold onto your profile forever, and they just "deactivate" it to hide it, but it still exists.
There actually is a way to delete your account forever. They give you two options essentially. One is to just “deactivate” the account, which only disables it, but then re-enables it when you login again. The second option is a full delete. They give you a chance to download everything from your profile, and then there’s a 30 day period where you can change your mind. If you don’t log back in within the 30 days, they permanently delete your account. I just did that back in July. Now, they claim they permanently delete the profile, but that’s at their word. Who knows if they don’t continue to store the data on their servers for some other reason. The interesting bit is that the data I downloaded from them allows me to create my account again and import that data back, if I change my mind on Facebook (which I won't)

How many more times can Facebook do this sorta thing before they are severely regulated and fined?

I pretty much only use FB for Paintball BST pages.... most of my family isn't my "friend" because my world view differs from theirs..... I don't really need it... but won't delete it either lol... never know when a sweet deal on an angel A4 may pop up!!
