I haven't tested this thoroughly, but a way to see whether something supports the save state is to watch the image that rolls onto the screen during a task switch. If that image is not immediately the one that shows up, then it's just loading again. Check the LinkedIn app to see what I mean.

The fb app has always pulled from a cache rather than saved the state. Nothing is new in this behavior.

So whats the difference between that and save state in iOS4?

When you launch the app again, it may launch in the same place, but it has to unpack the interface and load data into memory and then display. A multitasked enabled app can do many things, and one of them is immediately be accessible when it appears on the screen.

But, if you leave the facebook app open on your news feed, then close it, then open it again, it goes back to you news feed immediately without a loading screen, you just have to wait for it to refresh. So whats the difference?

There is no "loading" screen but it is certainly "loading."

If they implemented multitasking, it would launch immediately to the newsfeed where you left off, and then load in new stuff above your current position in the feed.

It does not do this.

If you want to see how a real multitasking app works, download Dropbox.
