I created a blank test account linked to a burner email. Right out of the gates it gave me lots and lots of friend recommendations that I was connected with on my primary account.
Ouch. 😬

Do you have cookies and trackers on your browser? That's the only thing I can think of.... or it is tied to your IP address and connected it to your main account. There's got to be ways Facebook can track people that we don't know about, that aren't immediately apparent. I have no doubt Facebook has certified geniuses working for them to figure out clever ways to track people.

Here is something a lot of you probably aren't considering. When you use WhatsApp and Facebook, you are also exposing personal information about friends that don't even use said apps. It's bad enough many of you continue to use the app but, to facilitate the data collection of friends who haven't consented is not right.

Stop allowing yourselves to be abused and profited from online. No app is worth that price.

I don’t care WHY you’re collecting it. I don’t want it collected. Also, I don’t trust you.

Luckily you’re not forced to have an account and the data collection is as well known as their business model.

I don’t recall if I even used a separate browser. It was a while ago. Probably IP or cookies.

Websites then. Problem solved.
We have web browsers to access that data, don’t we?
If only...

While the emotional appeal is to delete Facebook, the reality is that it IS a good social tool if used responsibly. It's entirely possible to create a burner page that has no information about yourself to connect with businesses and social groups.

And if the desire is to stop the tracking across pages, then install a VPN\Ad blocker.

it’s also a rational response. Social sounds like a good idea but the net has been negative. But even if you love it Facebook has so many ways of tracking you that I am not sure a VPN matters.

i have left facebook 2 days left...deleted everything, just kept my account to manage the FB page. solved
the facebook was only about ads....one positive on facebook was, that it showed me how many idiots living around me :)

Deleted all my WhatsApp data (had it before Facebook bought it) and closed the account.
No need to read Facebook's sugar-coated PR explanations.

Facebook is like Adobe Flash, it used to be cool at somepoint but now its a toxic relic and has no place in modern society. Its suffocating, while Google and Amazon both are privacy abusers just as much as FB, they at least create something that is worth while and add value to society like Amazon AWS, Audible, Kindle, Google Maps, Google Docs, Android, Chromium browser..etc.

All that Facebook does is create a platform for people to communicate then gather that information and sell it. I don't think they deserve the name "tech" company. More like research, ads, and surveillance company.

Well said.

The moral of this story is:
Delete Facebook.
6+ months clean! And I think Facebook believes me this time because I got an email saying my account was no longer recoverable lol. Problem now is insta. I know people from all over. Yea texting exists but maintaining relationships for part of what i do is important and it’s hard to cut everyone off, especially when many people are not local. Advice from anyone?

Give people you are currently in contact with 2 alternates to contact you. If they don't follow through, so be it.

That was the battle I fought but I quickly found out who cared and who didn’t. I sent all “Friends” a message of my intent of deleting FB and my other accounts. I gave my phone number and email. I told them to send me a text or email with their contact information. I left that up for 73 hours. Only 1/3 replied but over 3/4 read it with no reply.

If you really want to know who cares and doesn't, switch to Android 100%. 🤣

I tried for over 9 months, family and friends are so stuck in iMessage and Facebook Messenger that they would rather not learn to use another app. Then there is Facetime that my parents on their ipad mini just got comfortable with because Covid forced them to.

WhatsApp is so so popular outside of North America and they don't understand our addiction to iMessage. I don't understand how people are addicted to Facebook even after all the data collection stories. But people still use it because to them stories are just that, stories. All of these stories of Signal and Telegram, are for nerds like us and these individuals will never leave their beloved apps.

I am sorry to say there is no escaping Instagram, the user base are too loyal and addicted. There is an alternative called PixelFed but like most FOSS projects I don't see it succeeding and turning into the standard. The good thing about Instagram is its just a picture sharing platform and you don't need it.

Best way to treat Instagram is like treating drug addicts, if they refuse to help themselves and leave their addiction, leave them face the consequences and you move with your life.
