Ok guys, love the X, but FaceID works worse than TouchID. Period.

Facts: yesterday i've set up my X, everything went smooth for the first 36 hours. FaceID worked as expected, meaning as good as TouchID plus the increase in usability of attention features etc. I was enthusiast.

But tonight i went out into a club-restaurant with friends...maybe it was the lights, maybe it was the mess, maybe it was the people...it's irrelevant. In that scenario, 80% of the times i've had to unlock with passcode. It was a classic scenario in which i was mentally "defending" the iPhone, but if this was a Samsung in the hands of a friend, i would have been laughing at him. The simple reality was that i was forced to unlock my phone with a passcode, obviously after spending a few seconds looking like an idiot staring at his phone.

I'm absolutely positive FaceID next year will blow away touchid in virtually every use case...but as of today, guys, i've spent the night unlocking with passcode, that's the brutal reality.

On the flip side, low light pictures are exponentially better than my "old" iphone 7 plus (which is now my wife's).

The rest is fantastic, battery life clearly better than 7 plus for my use.

So as an iOS user and high income spender i'm fine, but i would never, ever recommend this to anyone.

I wish I was a high income spender.

Probably not correct in English..I guess you understand what I meant
We found the rich guy

Ups sorry maybe my English level isn’t adequate and obviously used the wrong expression..I obviously simply meant something like “I can easily afford it so I don’t really matter if it’s not perfect, but obviously a Samsung s8 at half the price is the better choice unless you absolutely want iOS and you are absolutely ok in spending 1k+ for a less then perfect phone.

If you felt you looked like an idiot staring at your phone, than you were holding it too close. You don’t need to hold it up to your face directly. No one know I’m doing anything when I unlock my phone or authenticate for Apple Pay. Cause I’m not obviously staring at my phone. Also try turning off require attention. Also, try redoing it.

I’ll try to re set up it but I think the problem was the environment...for the previous 36 hours FaceID was absolutely perfect, nearly magical.
It’s nonsense to say “I was holding it wrong”...I don’t care how I am supposed to hold my phone, I didn’t need to care with touchid, If I have to care for FaceID it just does not work as it should and how it will.

Works as intended for me and I highly recommend to anyone.

I think it’s a matter of environment. It worked perfectly for me as well, but not tonight.

Actually the optimal distance for Face ID is about a foot or 30cm.. which is the normal distance when you hold your phone and look at it. This is a bit annoying when I pick up my phone at night on my bed. I need to hold it further away to unlock. Other than this situation, Face ID has been working well and is improving over time.

I laughed when I heard that Face ID gets better as you use it more, but I've learned that its true. I've have much less lock outs now then I did when I set it up.

Tonight I did a quick search, and found a tip that I hope will be useful (not sure it’s true): if it does not unlock and ask for a passcode, do not try to redo Face ID and just input the code. It should remember the failed face, understand it was ok and adapt. Hope it’s true, we’ll see...thanks god im an high income spender ;) !

If you don't like it, return it.

You had to mentally defend the iPhone to yourself? Dysfunctional drivel.

Without any real facts as to why it was failing on you, you create a thread stating that it doesn't work as intended. The onus is on you to prove your case. You don't even have decent circumstantial evidence.

Why did you feel a need to let the forum know that you make a lot of money, and keep products that you aren't happy with (as to performance)? Very arrogant and egotistical.

Most reviews I've read and comments on this site say that Face ID works well. Once you were out of the club environment did it go back to working as well as the first 36 hours for you?

It seems to me that if your iPhone X picks up on someone else’s face by accident or otherwise it will then ask for your passcode.

Yes.
Obviously It did not work in an environment which is like 1% of my use cases, and 0,1% of the average use case.
Still, tonight it simply did not work. It was a bit like trying to unlock touch ID under the rain.

Why did you laugh? Did you think it was a joke? FaceID learns the nuances of your face over time so that it can become more accurate. It's neither a false claim or some sort of sorcery, just science and technology.

I’ve actually been very impressed with it. It honestly feels as fast if not faster than TouchID.
I literally pick up my phone while looking at it and swipe up and bam I’m in. I don’t have the attention setting off either. It’s just a normal process for me. It’s so seamless.

It’s also worked in the dark, and even at some angles where I thought it would never work. There’s been very few times where it hasn’t worked on the first try.

Don't apologise if English isn't your first language, people around here will take any opportunity to rip you apart when they disagree with your observations. I must admit though, I find Face ID to be very good indeed, and even better when you turn off the attention aware rubbish. The only situation it doesn't really work in for me is in a morning when I'm laid in bed. My phone is on a wireless charging stand but the angle is such that I do need to pick it up and unlock it rather. No big deal really, but yeah I think there's a long way to go for Face ID. Having stereo detectors with more acute angles will help massively, as will having sensors in different orientations. If they can get it so that you can leave your phone on the desk next you, tap the screen to wake and just glance at it to unlock, that would be perfect. I can kinda' do that now but you do have to lean over it a bit depending on how far away it is.
