What if you can just hold your hand or finger anywhere near the front of the phone, no need to touch it, and it will detect your fingerprints? With the rumored sensors on this phone like lasers and infrared and the speed and accuracy rumored, I can't see why it couldn't. These sensors can also detect heat and shape, maybe grab multiple prints not just a part of one.

This is not new, contactless fingerprint scanners are being used and work with a wave, so using lasers to detect fingerprint data from a distance is already a thing, and it could be way more secure gathering more data points.

Will the first FaceID do this? maybe not, can they do it this way, yes. So it's very interesting and probably a much better solution down the road than the current touch scanner that has issues with wet hands.

This method is already employed elsewhere so why not?

Hey that's interesting!

I'm with you in that it's probably asking too much from the imminent FaceID on the 8/X/Pro, but still a cool tweak/evolution to TouchID.

Although, I'd imagine it'd be a challenge for it to make out the 3D aspect of fingerprints as oppose to a picture. Faces contain more depth obviously, so the 3D detection should be easier for the lasers to scan?

Even face id or finger id both is not fast than type in your passcode 4-6 digit

I never using finger scan on my iphone since it come out
passcode faster and easier ......

finger scan is great add on feature but i think time by time people just use classic way

i dont know how Face ID coming gotta work but if they build alike Finger id then i rather using passcode

Lmao. Even a single digit passcode would be considerably slower (at least 2 seconds), than Touch ID.

How is resting your finger on the homebutton for less than a second slower than typing in a pass-code?
Touch ID is way faster.

I don't know what solution Apple has in mind, but I hope to God they keep it simple. First and foremost these devices are PHONES. That's mission-critical stuff. More security gadgetry means greater chance something will go wrong, and access to the phone becomes impossible. Whatever they do, I hope they don't use first adopters as a test bed or future versions of the technology.

I have a 10-character-long password. Using touch id is absolutely faster than typing passcode.
And no, more people will opt in more convenient way and discard the so-called "tradition way" when possible.

Based on what I've read, if "Face ID" is indeed employed in the manner that is being reported, it sounds pretty cool. I will wait and see before speculating how it compares to current solutions or alternate solutions.

Judging by the quality of camera photos, no way could they pick up the fine details of a fingerprint when you are moving your hand.

I mean passcode number 1-2-3-4-5-6 not word -
That would take at least 3 seconds, whereas Touch ID is less than 1 second. So I congratulate you on being oblivious to that fact and for wasting your time using not only an embarrassingly easy to guess password that nets you no security, but also typing in every time you want to use the device.

Honestly priceless, but that's what you get on these forums or any forums really...priceless comments.

In what universe? You wake the phone with your finger and boom you r in instead of waking it and then typing in some digits

I used finger print before ... sometime it wont go thru so have to rescan take too much times, better way for me is number code , faster and easier:apple:

You're doing it wrong! TouchID only fails me when my fingers are wet. FaceID might be better that way if your hands are covered or dirty etc.

And the fact that I can unlock the phone from within my pocket / as I'm pulling it out = 1000x faster than entering password.

You can't be serious? it takes a second to put your finger on the home button for Touch ID to unlock the phone, in fact people were complaining that the second generation of Touch ID was too FAST

Entering in passcode is no where near as fast as Touch ID  and probably not as fast as Face ID will be otherwise Apple wouldn't do it

You're in another world if you think typing a 4-6 digit passcode is faster than Touch ID

lol what? Touch ID has unlocked my phone while it's still in my pocket before it's too my face

What? There is no way that you can type a 4-6 digit passcode more quickly than even the first gen touchID reads a print. 2nd gen reads so fast that Apple had to change the way users wake/unlock the phone because people were bypassing the lockscreen too fast. FaceID is rumoured to be able to accurately scan a face in a millionth of a second!

If you personally prefer using a PIN that's fine, but it's not faster. I don't know if I'll like faceID or not, but personally, going back to typing a PIN would seem very cumbersome to me after nearly 4 years of TouchID.

Putting in a passcode can be faster depending on peoples circumstances.
Does Touch ID work when your fingers are dirty ? Nope. Does punching in a passcode ? Yep.

I've been trying to think about this 'differently' for a while and think I've come up with an apple like solution that explains the lack of Touch ID and how they will help make face ID secure and it's so incredibly simple.

First and foremost, Touch ID was never meant to be destined for this phone. Touch ID was the back up incase Face ID wasn't ready. The position irrelevant

Secondly for security, it's simple. It will just always be scanning for your face. Doesn't detect your face, the phone locks. Like Touch ID, you'll be able to set up multiple faces so if you want your partner to have access to your phone, when you pass it, scans their faces recognises it so the browsing experience continues - all automatically.
