enter your passcode.. let it learn that those are your puffy eyes
    ;)

    ----
(and maybe just to check if it's doing what it's supposed to.. retry unlocking with faceID after verifying via passcode)

your body does change while you sleep..
for example, you're taller in the morning than you are at night.
    (about 1cm on average)

This is exactly what happens to me. My right eye is pretty much closed and my left eye is half way open and the brightness of the screen makes my face crinkle up, so it never recognizes me when I check my phone in the middle of the night.

    really?
that's your response after the last few exchanges?

    hmm. ok
so if you're directed to an article about your facial muscles/features changing shape during sleep, what is your response going to be then?

Reset faceID and do it so the phone is placed further away from your face.

Probably a combination of gravity pulling on fat and fluid making your face puffier.

I find it funny that these type of excuses as to why Face ID isn't working for the OP is really reaching.

    excuses?
this is new technology.. we don't know how sensitive the thing is or what exactly it's reading..

if your eyes are puffy, it might not recognize you.. is that right? or wrong?
again, we don't know. (well, apparently you know )

and through various scenarios of this happening and various people realizing certain things when the phone won't unlock, we'll learn more about it.

    ------
why be so (whatever it is you're being)?

i mean, you're seemingly saying this:

Why Are Eyes Sometimes Puffier in the Morning After You Wake Up?
While we sleep, we don't blink. And this is part of the reason why eye puffiness develops.

Dark circles can form under the eyes from stress or lack of sleep.
Blinking for eyelids is like walking for legs. When idle, some people develop swelling in their lower extremities that goes away as soon as they start walking and muscles in the legs begin "milking" the trapped fluids (edema), which are released back into circulation.

A similar action takes place in the eyelids. The closed, non-blinking eyelids during sleep potentially can swell in certain people prone to this problem. So in the mornings, you could wake up with unusually puffy, swollen eyelids. As soon as you open your eyes and blinking begins, some of this swelling can diminish in an hour or so.

    ...has no effect on faceID.
ok then. how are you so sure?

I find that FaceID is significantly worse at reading my face when I use it early in the morning when waking up. I don’t even wear makeup! Will see if it improves over time as I try it more often.

    Same!!

    I partially blame bed-beard...

I have a good size beard, and sleeping on it changes the shape.

FaceID has not worked once in the morning...(in portrait mode)

Honestly, it has only been working about 80-90% for me. Definitely less than touchID. However, when it does work, it’s great. I’m already flicking up on any other phone or device I use, expecting it to go home or open.

I had the flick to close(go home) for a good while on some of my jail broken phones, so it is a natural motion and I love that.

I just do wish FaceID was more reliable and consistent.

So according to the comments here, in order to have Face ID recognize you in the morning you have to:

Wake up without puffy eyes and face
Wake up, get up and not use your phone for about an hour until gravity takes effect on your fat and fluid in your face
    Brush your beard first
    Put on make up first
    Drink coffee first
Be fully awake when you open your eyes
Be prettier when you wake up

I guess that's all it takes to turn off your alarm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

me? no, i don't have to do any of those things..
i wake up and it works
(well, i've only tried it 3 mornings so far but every time, it works)

but at the same time, i don't think ignoring OPs post as user error (or whatever) is the right path to take.

i mean, do you think OP is lying.. or he's doing something wrong in the morning? or do you think there's a possibility that his phone hasn't been unlocking for him in the morning?

Until I actually get out of bed, put on my fake tan, makeup, my lashes, put my teeth in, pop in my glass eye and don my wig, Face ID has no idea who I am.

Tried again this morning with all the suggestions and no luck. I figured out it is related to the laying position as I couldn't get it to open even laying in bed last night before bed. Im just going to redo my scans and do the first scan laying down to hopefully cover it.

I had issues with this, but I realized I usually keep one eye shut in this scenario. Opened both up and I was good.

Matter of fact, mine is the opposite. Ive noticed in the mornings, just the light of the display is enough to unlock my phone while in bed.

just had my first morning with the X. It also wouldn't unlock.
Thought it was because my eyes weren't fully open...

Strange mine will unlock with one eye open, and it can be either eye. Lol

But does anyone know if they have someone else try to unlock their phone and when it doesn’t work you can immediately try it on yourself and it works? It’s the same if it doesn’t read my face right the first tome.

I have to hit my power button to turn screen off then hit it again to wake then let it scan my face.

Or I have to swipe up then it scans it again before it unlocks.

I assumed it would try multiple times while one lock screen then lock you out if it was not reading correctly like Touch ID then you would have to enter password.

Is this how it is for everyone else?
