Just sharing my story as an FYI and also curious as to if anyone else has had this issue.

It’s only been 3 and a half weeks since i got my X, but FaceID seems to have “deteriorated” so to speak.

For the first week, everything was fine. But after that, it seemed to be getting sluggish when unlocking my phone. It would take a full 2 seconds to “scan” my face and unlock. I didn’t think too much of it, until it stopped scanning my face all together.

When trying to unlock my phone this past week, it wouldn’t do anything. No lock icon animation, no “incorrect face” wiggle, no error message. Just stayed on the FaceID screen until I tapped it to being up the passcode input.

This would happen in third party apps/when using ApplePay as well. Just forever sitting on the FaceID prompt waiting for my face, but not doing anything at all.

Resetting/restoring my phone only temporarily fixes it until it happens again a short while later. I got onto Apple Support chat to explain my issue, and i was immediately connected to a senior advisor who said that this is a “known issue” and said he would schedule an appointment for me.

I’m sure this isn’t a widespread issue, obviously, or we would’ve heard all about it by now. But I did find it interesting that they said it was a “known issue” and were very quick to connect to me to a senior advisor and request I come into an Apple Store. Usually they have me jump through their troubleshooting hoops before finally resorting to an appointment.

Earliest time available is tomorrow afternoon; so I’ll be going in then. I’m curious if anyone else has run into this issue and what Apple did at the Apple Store if you took it in?

TL;DR: FaceID stopped scanning my face but with no error messages. Apple says it’s a known issue and wants to get me into an Apple Store to take a look at it. Wondering if anyone else has run into this issue?

Thanks! /betatester

Get a replacement. I am having no issues the face id.

Heck, it even recognizes me from the side if I am just putting my phone down on my desk.

Well, this is definitely reassuring. My FaceID experience hasn’t been the greatest— often failing when it has a clear shot at my face, and taking forever to unlock when it finally does work.

Glad to know it’s most likely due to a faulty model and not how FaceID is supposed to work. Will update once I take a trip to the Apple Store, should anyone be interested lol.

Update: So as expected, Apple did end up replacing my phone. At first, they were trying to pin it on user error— either I wasn't starting at my phone during the unlock process, or that my look had changed since setting it up. I explained that I did try to disable "require attention" as well as redo the FaceID setup. Both didn't resolve the problem.

Diagnostic test showed everything good, but while the rep was typing in some notes, the issue resurfaced. I was able to show the technician first hand what was happening. No error messages or passcode prompt, just FaceID endlessly waiting for a face. I also tried to do an Animoji, which *did* cause an error message to appear: "Face tracking failed".

The rep didn't have much to say other than "That's wild... we haven't seen this before." I got replacement phone set up and everything seems to be working fine so far.

In regards to Broken Hope: I *do* use Apollo, although this issue has been happening since before I installed it. Now that I think about it however, it did start happening more after I began using Apollo. If this is the case and it's a software issue, then I hope it's resolved real soon as it is quite annoying.
