The thing is though. Here at least in the UK, there are not many data tariffs that are unlimited. If it was enabled by default and a user was using FaceTime Audio often and for long calls, this could quickly use all of their data allowance up.

Get yourself onto Three. Good quality unlimited data.

Hi

I'm just wondering how Facetime audio compares to HD voice for anyone who's tried both.

I'm on 4G in the UK as are all other iPhones in the house and to be honest i cannot notice and difference in quality to regular calls, HD voice apparently works with no intervention if both parties are on 4G with compatible handsets.

You're right, HD Voice just happens when both parties are on HD Voice handsets. But I think FaceTime audio is still higher quality, having used both.

Thanks for the info! When the iPhone 5 came out I remember they mentioned higher quality calls, but tbh I thought it was a new Apple led thing that might only be supported in select US networks or something. Just looked into it now after your post, and found out wideband audio was available on Three before the iPhone 5 even came out :)

95% of my calls are to my girlfriend on an iPhone 4 so not been able to take advantage of it and so been impressed with FaceTime Audio. Will have to call up more friends on wideband audio compatible phones and networks though!

You have a great reason to buy here a nice new iPhone 5 :)
That'll certainly put you in the good books.

I know a few friends on 3 although the coverage is not bad in my town (compared to the other networks), the coverage is patchy and very poor in the country side when compared to the other networks.

my experience is completely the opposite, I have signal around most A and B roads whereas with O2 before I only had marginal signal over GPRS
