Hello guys,

I am having a trouble with the camera when doing Facetime. Normally it works fine but sometimes even though facetime app is running camera does not turn on automatically and I cannnot see the green light next to the camera. When I shut down the mac and restart, it works back again.

Could this caused by the fact that I do not shut down the system? I normally do not shut down as I prefer sleep mode. Or is it some kind of fault?

it is called an iMac being an iMac. chances are that something is getting stepped on inside the badly written OSX that macs have. if you asked apple they would say reboot and see it has been fixed.

and wouldn't you know it. my facetime camera failed to start today. right when i was expecting a call from the uk. so i had my ipad as a backup, and the sound decided not to work on that. then on the reboot of my imac it got lost and didn't initialize correctly so i lost my finder bar at the top and non of my desktop showed so i had to reboot my imac a second time.

i remember when apple people use to laugh at windows with there you need to reboot the computer every week to keep it working. well apple with 10.11 is just about the same. if only 10.12 worked with my apps and was more stable

There is a setting in flash and web browsers to disable the camera in privacy settings. Could try unchecking those to see if it stops happening.

I have found that my iMac camera seems to go down now more often that working it seems. I have not been able to determine what app is killing me, but I have found a solution.

If I go into Terminal and enter 'sudo killall VDCAssistant' then the camera starts the next time I start Facetime. So obviously something is trashing the VDCAssistant service. Unit I figure out what, I am wondering if someone can point me towards a tutorial on how to make an applescript program that will run this terminal command.
