Hi,

I did a forum search and used MRoogle before posting here, but am still not sure if what I'd like to try is possible.

I have an MBP running 10.5.8. I hope to get an iPad 2 for my mother (syncing periodically for her with my Mac, since she doesn't have a computer herself) so that she can make video calls to my sister's iPhone 4.

I see that Facetime comes installed on the iPad 2 and is compatible with the iPhone 4. However, the minimum spec for Facetime on a Mac is 10.6.6.

Would the fact that I don't have Facetime on my MBP prevent the iPad that syncs with it from making calls to a compatible device?

No. They can operate independently. You only need the Mac app if you want to make/receive calls on the Mac.
