I preordered an iPhone 4S last Friday from Verizon. Will it be able to FaceTime over 3G, even if i kept my unlimited data plan? Thanks!
eurghh, do you think there are plans to enable it soon? idk, it just would feel cool to be able to videochat anywhere :3 does the front-facing camera work with skype? ie, can you have a skype videochat from iphone over wifi?
no, I would think if they had intentions of allowing it they would have included it in iOS5. Maybe when they release an LTE iphone?
As stated above FaceTime over 3G is absolutely possible. You must jailbreak the phone, however. Most expect a JB for 5.0 to be out shortly after release.
I believe Apple have had discussions with the mobile networks before and since FaceTime was introduced on the iPhone 4 but the networks are reluctant to allow it over 3G. There is mo way of knowing if and when they and Apple will come to an agreement regards this.
iOS 5 is providing the base ability. But it is not active. My guess it'll be a new feature in iOS 5.1 and only be allowed when the carrier enables it. Similar to how tethering and MMS was provided, but not enabled until the carrier wanted it.
The carrier doesn't want you using the data. They implemented tiered data plans for a reason. They want you to use the phones you paid for on the plan you pay for, just not as much as you want and for what you want to use it for.
