Facetime without sim

I've been wondering this since we can make facetime call from ipod touch 4 to iPhone 4.
Anyone has tried this?
if not, is there any clue that Apple may allow us to make facetime call on iphone 4 without sim in the future?

EDIT: well, turn on the airplane mode and I still can make facetime call... I guess we don't need a sim to make facetime call lol
