Never mind the dark, how do you unlock it without looking at it? I often unlock as I get the phone out of my pocket of when it's laying flat on a pub table. Something tells me it's going to be a pain in the arse.

FaceID supposedly can unlock even without looking at it directly.

The fact is, nobody knows how it's going to work and I'm sure Apple have tested all these obvious use cases. So let's not panic and wait until the official release.

Im waiting for the topics "my misses was in a right mood at the weekend when she couldn't get home due to her iPhone not recognising her caked up clown face when she was out on the piss with her girlfriends"
[doublepost=1504300306][/doublepost]A perfect example of facial recognition
Is Windows 10. I. Ant put a % on times it works but even in but I will say that it works in the dark pretty well
So if Microsoft did it then Apple will only improve on it and it might be pretty goood

I'm not panicking, I won't be buying it this year anyway. My point is if the only way to unlock a phone is by facial recognition then its impractical. Apple won't be getting rid of the facility to open the phone quickly with a finger unless they really are stupid.

The passcode unlock will remain hopefully.

What if it unlocks instantaneously when you turn it on? If you turn the display on and it's unlocked then it is as good as Touch ID IF the accuracy and positioning are as high as Touch ID.

It's reported to unlock within hundreds of milliseconds. This should appear virtually instantly to users.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder if I can use my dogs face to unlock the phone. I think that would be a neat feature.

The downside I see to facial recognition if I can use your picture to unlock your phone. Let's hope Apple took that security flaw into consideration.

Reports have been saying for some time now that it uses 3D sensors, so no, a 2D picture should not work.

It was blown way out of proportion. I had a couple of iPhone 4 devices and on both you had literally try and hold it specifically to make the signal go down. Either way, that wasn't an obvious use case under test scenarios. Real life usage will always differ from test scenarios.

While I agree it's a certain demographic based on holding preferences, I would hardly say it was small issue. I don't death grip my phone very often, but I do for games sometimes, and I would be annoyed too if my game kept disconnecting. In this case, phone calls dropping, etc.

This is the golden question, and the reason I keep resisting against this somehow being the end all of be all evolution of Touch ID. They're going to have to do an awful lot of selling, and I'm unlikely to be convinced.

This, lack of Pro Motion (if it's not included), and the new gesture based swiping, might get me to buy a 7S this year instead of the 8.

Before TouchID was introduced people were fine with using password. They get panicked the idea of using fingerprints to unlock phone, lots of what if's...
Look now you can't live without it. Face unlock is the next step up. Just relax.

Mild opposing opinions are obviously not welcome this discussion I see.

'Quick he's got a slightly different opinion, tell him to relax and stop panicking'... Christ on a bike lol. As I said it doesn't affect me, I have no reason to be worried about this, just offering an opinion based on my experience using iPhones for years. Ignore it if it offends.

I thought his reply was rather mild compared to some the name-calling and attacks I've seen here. :)

Good questions. If you can record multiple faces maybe you can use your dog's face or even his rear or maybe yours. Who knows, maybe if you record a picture then you can use the picture to open the phone. I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

I'm sure it was but I haven't read many posts in this thread, only really the notifications I've got. It does sort of prove the point that opinions on the internet attract extreme responses whereas if we were discussing this in the pub we'd probably find it quite constructive.

I've often said that the internet is the CB radio of the modem age.

I want a discussion like this in my local pub but the punters only talk about politics and football.

I never had reservations about TouchID. I couldn't wait to try it. Thought it was brilliant. I have my doubts that facial recognition though.

You have doubts about facial recognition because you don't fully understand everything it entails. I see posts like this often on here. Naturally, someone will have doubts about technology that involves one's security if the technology has not been exposed aside from speculation. Aside from that , reading opposing rumors who doubt Apple or there decision to abandon Touch ID, are unsure if Facial recognition will "Work" properly or not. This Company will be clearing any doubts shortly. It's a matter of the user accepting the technology as reality Once they have the opportunity to test/evaluate the technology personally.

It's perhaps the consumer doubting Apple over this because of how they cocked up the headphone jack last year. Removing a popular feature and then marketing an alternative that doesn't suit everybody can be the difference between buying a product or not. I know the standard Apple fan defence mechanism for that opinion is to say 'well nobody forces you to buy the iPhone' and that is very true. But that backfired in many countries last year. People are tending to keep older devices with these popular features for longer. In the words of major suppliers 'that's concerning'..

Apple isn't in a position where they can please every consumer what decisions that they make with sacrifices one feature over the other. Now in the case of the headphone jack, everyone is aware of the dismay that if affected for those who appreciated it. One thing about this company, is there not afraid to take initiative and move forward with what they (Highly subjective) believe is better for the iPhone. In the case of touch ID and face ID, this is another method that may not everyone will agree with, but isn't necessarily a fair comparison to the headphone jack either, because it's more security oriented over a hardware feature.

But either way you look at it, when I see a post about those who doubt face ID. How can you doubt something that you have no idea the details or functionality behind new technology. I think it's a fair statement to allow face idea to have the opportunity to debut and then make the assessment rather you trust that Face ID is on par with protecting one's security. But there is one thing for certain, Apple is a company that values security more over than anything else, which I put my trust they know what they are doing in fold. I digress though, Face ID is also not an exception where Apple would release technology if it wasn't ready in the sense of protecting the consumers identity.
