Im in canada and i have a factory unlocked iphone 4 and best way to check is to try a different carrier (foreign) sim card ,no need to be activated and settings/general/about/network and should show the carrier name even if it says no service in springboard.

best way I know of plug it snyc it with Itunes with a sim in it. you should see the fallowing. (Congratulations your iPhone is Unlocked)

but wouldnt a normal iphone 4 that's jailbroken and unlocked says the same thing?

jdaniel's point still stands. You can unlock then hide Cydia, inserting any SIM foreign SIM would give the same results as popping the SIM in to a factory unlocked phone.

So your method doesn't prove factory unlock, as jdaniel said.

If you look closely you can find out thru the settings menu and many other ways if it's jb or not or if cydia is hidden, poofed or docked thru sbsettings.
What jdaniel was posting was nonsense, you want to sit there and argue over bs then go ahead. The op found out by restoring and using a non official sim.
Have a good day;)

Nope! only Factory Unlocked. Itunes does not recognize the hacktivated unlock only the factory unlock.

Thanks! another fast and easy way to know!! ^^
I thought of it too, even *IF* normal jailbroken/unlocked iphone 4 shows the same message when it's connect to itune, all you got to do is check the baseband and fw to see.

I'd bet the issue is the baseband has lots of security and encryption included, it's not the code that's complicated.
IIRC, Apple does encrypt their phones. While you might be able to one day unlock one phone by doing a brute force attack, you'd have to do it all over again for the next phone. Not very efficient.

Thanks for all the helpful response!
Purchased 5 Factory unlocked IP4 White edition yesterday by convincing the seller to open all iphones out of the box and restored the iphones, then tested with T-mobile sim. Not to mention the cheap price that I paid! ^^

You Mac geeks rock!
Congrats!

I forgot about that. This tends to work better for people who buy from ebay. However, the OP may not have had a notebook that the iphones could be plugged into.

How would you find out in settings? Unless they've installed software from Cydia I don't see how you could. You can remove Cydia through SSH, no visible software required.

I'm not arguing, the fact that the thread is resolved is irrelevant, simply asking.

There is no point. He just wants to be right and thats the end of it. If the baseband is old and there are no tell tale signs of jailbreak, the software and baseband all matches, just by looking there is no way to tell.

One has to actually go one step further and do a reset/restore like easter mentioned and a few others on this thread.

He keeps changing his story anyways, first its just swap sim then its do a restore etc etc... theres no point engaging him, you will find the answers provided by several people in this thread. Just for info of coz this thread is basically moot, but just for sake of healthy discussion, you can check them out.

If the bb and iOS don't match, it's a telltale sign that it's likely jb. A factory unlock doesn't need to preserve the bb.
