factory unlocked?

Ok my friend is selling a factory unlocked iphone it is jailbroken but it does not have ultrasn0w on it. He got it from ebay. I was just wondering if there is a way to find out if it is factory unlocked with out updating it? its running on firmware 4.0.1
also sometimes it goes into no service.

Go to cydia, manage, packages and see if ultrasnow is listed there.
If its not and it accepts a non-approved sim then its good to go.
