The FLA will continue to monitor Apple's and Foxconn's efforts at compliance, and will post follow-up reports on its investigations.

Apple???? What compliance do they have in this issue? They don't own Foxconn, they don't manage it, they aren't even its only customer.

Is FLA going to monitor Dell's compliance. Microsoft, Nintendo, Acer, HP etc. They are all customers with major lines (and some have had mass suicide protests that called out work conditions as THE reason)

Really $400+ per iPhone in profit for the base model is a lot.

And likely erroneous. Sure some iFixit tear down says that it only costs $100 or whatever for the parts. But that doesn't include patent licensing, labor to produce etc. For all we know it's more like $100 in profit.

Methink Apple decide now to address

Apple started this a while ago. It only feels like it is new because of the press coverage.

It is a good news for the workers in foxconn. Expecting more good news for our common workers, not only in foxconn, but in many many other similar facilities.

Don't hold your breath. Unless those facilities do work for Apple no one is paying attention to them so they will likely continue to do as they wish.

And then there is critical conditions, like firefighters on a large fire who don't have to leave after 48 hours, or after 90 hours.

Not true. Firefighters are actually forced to leave and it's typically more like after 24 hours. Why? Because if they are exhausted they are a danger to themselves and others. So they are rotated in and out.

You can apply the same logic to something like an iPhone line. tired people are more prone to not getting the work exactly right. And with something like an iPhone that is a big deal. One tiny little board or plug that is not in correct can DOA a unit during transit cause it comes totally loose. A tired people might not be monitoring safety systems as closely as he should be and there could be another fire/explosion like in that polishing plant that luckily only had a few dozen people inside or the injury/death count could have been 20 times what it was. And so on.

Yes it means more 'startup' costs to Foxconn to hire more folks, build more dorms etc. But it can profit them both in positive PR, legal standing and quality control not to have exhausted workers on the lines.

Here's my advice to everybody who pretends that Foxconn is such a great company to work for when you live in China: Move your sorry asses to China, work at one of their factories for a year and then tell us how great it was and how much you loved manufacturing products for decadent Americans that you could NEVER afford to buy yourself no much how many hours per day you work.

And when did you spend your year there.

Because you aren't actually giving advice you haven't taken are you? Of course you aren't. Only a troll would do something like that.

So give us all the details about your visit. We are giddy with anticipation to hear it

However, study after study has shown that working over forty hours a week is actually counter productive. A person working 60 hours a week for six weeks and a person working 40 hours a week for six weeks have exactly the same productivity - not same productivity per hour, but same total productivity. However, after those six weeks you have one person who is exhausted, and one who is fresh. After the six weeks, the person doing fewer hours will actually do more work.

I've only heard this anecdotally. People in quant finance, PE, and dozens of other jobs work well over 40 hours a week, and sometimes closer to 100. I'll bet Tim Cook works longer hours than any Foxconn employee. I'd actually like to read one of these studies.

Well, then why did you not simply press the up arrow button under the original post rather than posting a verbatim copy of it merely to simply add that it was a "very good post."

Your post added negative value.

I apologize for not using the alternate features of this forum. I prefer the good ol' fashion quote and respond rather than thumbs up and down. I bow to your online forum omnipotence. I have a major suspicion that your post is merely a passive aggressive attack due to you not agreeing with my stance in the thread. If I could go back in time and change my response to something I feel fell in line with your thinking you'd likely not have busted my proverbial balls on something so insignificant.
