Why? it was sold on ebay? Myself I would tuck it into my closet for a decade :)

If he STATED it was a prototype... AFAIK it didn't say that in the original listing. Can you take it to a store and see what they say btw?

I'd be careful...since it is a prototype/pre-production unit never intended for sale, Apple can probably claim that they still own the machine.

Yeah, it is interesting, but truthfully I'd really just rather have one that works right.

Since the connections for the battery are different I'm not sure if I'll be able to get another one to put in it.

I might go to the apple store and see what they say, but I don't really know if I want to be grilled by them about how I came to get this machine.

I agree, I would sell it and make some money off it.. I'm sure somebody would pay alot more than you did for it. Also, I would just take it to the Apple Store to see how puzzled they are haha and if they ask you got it off eBay, it's not like they can take it or anything.

Hmmm this is pretty interesting!
Thanks for sharing!

Ok

The guy from the UK offered 4k ("deadly serious"-his words)

it obviously could be worth more.

Take a little time as i'm pretty sure that 4k offer stands.

'Do i hear 5K?"

:D

Also, I'd perhaps make some anonymous inquiries as to what Apple Inc. would consider their property. If you try and sell this publicly as a proto it might rings some bells as the auction where you bought it had no mention of proto.

So find out first if it's legal. If it isn't, sell it to some unscrupulous villain here (we won't say anything) :)

How is that possible...?
But, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

There is one "Mac" I'd love to get hold of...:
The Intel Pentium IV developer "Power Mac".. I have a sweet penny burning in my pocket for it!!! :apple:

If the OP takes it to the Apple Store, they may keep it and say "too bad, so sad". Or maybe they'll keep it but exchange it for a new one, which would be schweeet too :)

I don't believe Apple has the right to just take it right then and there... It's (the thread starters) property.

Think of it this way. Ex- Counterfeit money. A retailer legally cannot take the money away from the person who is trying to use it. They can call the cops and go that route, but the retailer can do nothing but hold the person there.

In this case, I would imagine Apple couldn't do anything about it. That is as long as this wasn't stolen property in the first place.

Wow, nice find!

Apple tended to use red motherboard for their prototype unit, right?

I couldn't get into GSX.

dude i would honestly look into selling it. There is the poster offering $4000. You could buy a 15" mbp 2.8Ghz with 4 gb of ram and a 128 gb ssd woth a new 24" apple led cd.

You might even be able to get more for it!

These seem to pop up from time to time. I had a friend in college that wanted me to work on his iBook. I was fiddling around with it and realized that it didn't have a true model number like every other mac out there. I flipped it over and it had a sticker that said Apple internal use only do not remove from Apple campus. His dad worked for Apple in Texas. It was a few year old prototype of a model that had been long released, but I still got a chuckle out of the whole incident.

Fake!

I call it fake! This is definitely done in PhotoShop-job. There is no way Apple would release a computer this thin, people.

;)
