Our AppleTV is set up on my AppleID, which means I have to share my password with everyone. Generally, that means it's on a piece of paper and floating all over the house, and they can never find it when they need it.

I was considering setting up a generic email address/AppleID and Family Sharing. Is there a downside to doing this?

You can use family sharing with your existing ID as long as the other family members have Apple IDs.

Creating a generic email address will work and using the generic email as the "head of the family" will work too.

Before family sharing can be enabled, there must be a valid payment method on file for the "head of the family" AFAIK.

My Apple TV is setup with my main Apple ID but I’ve never had to share the password with anyone.

In iOS 13 everyone will be able to store their Apple login in the settings so the users can easily switch to their own account.

Streaming movies from a family member is a little more complicated; your library won't show up under the TV app. You'd have to search under the movies\tv show apps...

Are "family members" only people with Apple IDs, or can you add family members that aren't associated with an Apple ID? I'd like for my kids to have their own, so their stuff doesn't clutter mine, but I don't have any need to create an Apple ID for them.

Well that's a big disappointment. I'm not creating an Apple ID for my two and five year olds.

I hear you on that. That's why I sort of thought this new User Profile feature would sort of bridge the gaps for access to different users. Turns out it doesn't do much; seems to be aimed at sharing your library as a visitor on an Apple TV that isn't yours. Imagine just being able to make a local account, sort of like a Playstation if you are familiar, clicking what it is you want them to have access to(from your pool of movies, albums, whatever), which apps they can use and go from there. Highly disappointing.
