Family file sharing b/w multiple Mac computers

I have 3 different mac computers (Imac + 2 Macbooks). I want to have one central location on all laptops where I can store files and share files. Is my best bet Drop box/cloud based or attaching an external HD to the Imac and sharing this drive out to the other two computers. In Drop Box how will it work with one account vs multiple accounts across 3 computers. Any tips would be appreciated.
