I don't think Apple has a way of telling, the media is all the same, the only difference is the piece of paper that comes in the box is different.

jeff -- awesome, i'd go for it. i COULD have used my EDU discount on the leopard family pack but i ended up using amazon since shipping is free and there's no tax -- it's also $10 cheaper out the gate.

no, apple probably wouldnt be able to tell. idk, someone might think i'm one of those people who think apple is doing me a service by releasing leopard, and that i 'wouldnt dare steal from the mighty apple' but i really just feel bad pirating any software... osx is no exception.

I'm buying a single copy for myself and myself only. No need to snap at me or hang a "traitor" sign around my neck. I just stated my opinion and thought I made it clear that it didn't necessarily reflect Apple's stance.

Seeing that I'm being punished for having to pay $116 for an educational license, I'm personally not doing anything to drive that price any higher.
I'm in no position to judge your morality, or anyone else's, that's between you and whatever greater presence (if any) you believe in. I'm just trying to remind people that adverse consequences could arise as a result of their actions and the advice they give to others. The more people who use Family Packs or single install licenses for unintended purposes, the sooner we will see license activation and higher prices.

scare tactic? where's your proof based on apple's history? iwork?
did no one think of abusing licensing before leopard? is it a new thing?

again, i ask: 5 macs, 5 licenses for leopard. whats the big deal? what makes you think apple would sell family packs if they didnt intend on actually selling them? thats like saying that, if more people buy the 16gb ipod touch, then they will discontinue the 8gb model. they obviously intend to sell family packs -- a trend towards an increase of family licenses really doesnt say anything... just that more people are buying them. if apple was REALLY worried that people would abuse it then why sell it at all?

This may sound corny, but Apple has been pretty good to me and I'd feel kinda guilty doing something that was questionable. If I sell the Ibook it will be with Tiger. I'm going to go ahead and install CF8 tomorrow just to see if it's livable. If it runs ok with Tiger, it will probably be fine with Leopard. Who knows, maybe I'm underestimating the ibook, maybe it will work ok. If not, it will probably still bring close to $500 on ebay with Tiger.

if i had the cash and i was in your situation i'd definitely go for the macbook ;)

Apple is a hardware company that produces some nice software. I don't think they will ever consider doing things like OS activations especially considering the current ridiculous issues with Vista. Consumers hate being treated like thieves and the fact the Vista activation system is crazy buggy only makes it 100x worse. This of course does not imply you should blatantly pirate OSX, just that I don't see them going after people that do. OSX is a good product that takes a large amount of engineering $$$ to produce and certainly Apple deserves to be compensated. I guess in short my opinion is of course go buy it but don't fret over every last uber strict moral detail of the licensing...

"ok, so i can use a family pack with ANYONE who lives in the same dorm as me?"

"yep!"

"hmmm... what about people who live in different buildings but go to the same university?"

"um, yeah i think that is alright"

you heard it here from apple.
