ATT requires all smart phones to have some sort of data plan. The cheaper plans on a FAMILY contract are way better than going with prepaid plans, etc. After all, there are times he might want to use the data anyways.

I added a smartphone for a "poor" family plan. A day later data was added without my input. Tried to change phone type. Day later, it came back. But, I also know somebody that has a Iphone 3 for over a year and still does not have a data plan. Why AT*T has not caught it, who knows.

i had chores too.. if you thought my parents were going to pay me for it...HA! If i didn't do said chores, i got beat, so yeah i did the chores...

Sounds like you had a pretty tough childhood. I wouldn't wish a kid get beat over anything, much less not doing chores...

My point was most kids nowadays have chores. Most of the chores include an allowance. That's a fine way to teach your kid the value of money IMO. You want something like a cell phone data plan? We will just subtract it out of chore money.

You must have had a unique experience then! I recently gave my oldest son my Iphone 2g to replace his pos phone. All I did was swap the sim, restore in iTunes for him and off he went. That was 5 months ago. All he uses the phone for is phone calls and texts. I have yet to see an additional data charge on my bill from AT&T.
So hell, give it a go, and see what happens.

I think it is you who is having a unique experience. Maybe because the phone is so old, I don't know. I tried it on 2 different occasions with 2 different smart phones and within a month the data plan was added automatically.

Could be

The only thing I can think of: My wife's uncle only uses the phone for calls and nothing else. Now, if he started texting, or tried to access anything data related i.e. texts, email, web a data plan would be added by default. So, I guess you are right, in my case it is unique.
