Family Setup with Parent on Series 3 -- Possible?

I've done a little research and either can't find the answer or the answer isn't explicitly clear.

My wife has an Apple Watch Series 3. We'd like to get our oldest kid an SE and set up family setup. Do I need to upgrade my wife's watch to a series 4 or above or can we use family sharing with her still being on a series 3?

if you look at the requirements, it only lists specs for one watch, the one you're giving to the "kid"
there are no specs for a second watch for the "parent"

in theory this means the "parent" having a watch isn't even required, so it shouldn't matter what version they have.
