Family Sharing playlists. Not how I expected :/

    Hey guys,
Looking for some advice that might fix my problem.
I was under the impression that by using family sharing, it meant that each person could have their own playlists and hence an experience suited to just their music tastes.
However I have a family sharing plan with my wife and when either her or I make a playlist, it appears in the others music app. Is this how it should be? Was my initial thoughts wrong? Can I fix this???

    Cheers
    Matt

There is a toggle in the playlist if you scroll up in edit mode... 'Shared Playlist'

That is brilliant thank you :) it seems like quite a weird interface. It should be off by default I think. But once you turn it off you can only get it back by pressing the little share icon (box with the arrow) and cancelling it, then it is turned back on again.
    Seems very strange.

Yeah it is weird, does my tip actually work? (Can't test right now, just guessed!)

After turning it off and then creating a new playlist, new playlist defaults as not shared (no toggle visible in edit mode). The fact the toggle only appears after you've generated a share link (by tapping the share icon as you mention) suggests that toggling off later makes the link inactive.

However at no point when sharing a link does it mention as a side effect it will also be shared with your family. And so I'm not sure if the toggle does control family sharing- it just seemed like it might do after investigating your issue :)

In any case, they could improve the UI/UX for this!

If it turns you can't turn off family playlist sharing then let me say that your initial understanding laid out in your first post was also mine too. Separate accounts within a family should be totally separate for that kind of thing.

I started a Family Plan for Apple Music, yet I was under the impression that the For You section will be personalize under each Family Plan user.

Is that true? Or am I setting it up wrong?

Unfortunately it does not seem to of worked. I thought last night it may of just been slow to change due to server lag as that had been happening a lot yesterday but waking up this morning and her playlist is still there. :/

So just to clarify your steps.
My email account is our "shared" apps / music / movies account, and is now the default account for family sharing. So all I have to do is log my wife out of that account in the settings and log in with her own iCloud details?
Thus making my account with just my own iCloud and App Store details and her with her own but using my account through the family sharing?
But she won't lose any previous downloads doing this?

And on another topic, is anyone else still peeved that you have to use an old email address for your apple account as they wont let you change it to a @me.com one. Or has this issue been solved now?

    1. Your Device: Invite your wife's iCloud Account to Family Sharing from your (previously shared) account
    2. Wife Device: Get your wife to accept the invitation
    3. Wife Device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Family > Me and change wife's "Family Purchases" to the wife iCloud's account
    4. Wife Device: Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > and sign out of your account and sign in as wife's iCloud account

It will work as before. Existing in-app purchases will be kept, but new ones will not be shared.

Apps will update correctly. No having to swap accounts.
Only one password to remember on each device.
You can turn two-step authentication on now.
    She won't lose anything.
Apple Music will have separate playlists and recommendations.

With that said practically every feature of Apple Music is completely haywire today. All the family was signed in for a few hours, now all are asking to join up again - but can't proceed past welcome because it says we are already members....

Might take a few days to settle down.

Steps 1&2 are done, I set that up at the weekend in preparation. I'll have to try the others tonight.
Although, If she signs in to family sharing with her own iCloud account, will she still be using the family sharing (ie my account) to purchase apps or will she have to buy her own. And wouldn't that be defeating the object of "sharing" apps and their cost? Sorry for all the questions I'm just finding the whole process long winded and confusing. It would of expected it to be much simpler.

Yes, that is one thing that gave me a huge headache yesterday. I was like "Huh? I didn't actually share it. But it says 'shared' now? How do I turn it off? Come on, I just wanted to see what the 'share' menu offers, and now it's shared? With whom? Halp!!" ;)

Really, there is some weird UI stuff going on there. People like Eddy Cue always act like they are heavily using these services. Don't they notice this stuff after 5 minutes and complain to their teams?

I seem to have sorted out the playlist issue, I had to remove my wife from family sharing and reinvite her. As well as all the other steps above. Too complex a work around for something that should be so simple.
However, although I'm not getting her playlists, if she adds any music to my music it also appears under my "my music" tab. Is this something that others are experiencing? Is this normal and unavoidable?

I don't see any of my wife's playlists or music. She has her on AppleID which was added to the family plan.

Yea I set it up as I was instructed in the earlier post.
I have my own Apple ID and iCloud and so does my wife now. We are both on family sharing with my account as the billing account. Yet all the music she's been adding has been appearing in my music also but the playlists she has made have not. It's very strange and yet another issue with apple music. If have to say due to all the bugs I am not enjoying using it atm. Very disappointing.

Thanks a million , I have visited several Apple stores spoke in length to support on telephone and over 1 hour on a web chat and we were still sharing playlists and albums.

The bit they all missed was
    4. Wife Device: Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > and sign out of your account and sign in as wife's iCloud account

This setting would have existed as we used them before ios8 ..... Very simple yet so frustrating.

    It was driving me mad......
