Ok but those that are on family sharing should be able to, umm, I don’t know, family share? lol. From what I understand, Tile is able to share trackers. This only became a big deal when Apple entered the market.

We have a full HomeKit smart home and sharing an AppleId would cripple that lol.
I’m quite sure the family sharing aspect will be resolved pretty soon …… there may have also been other technical reasons it wasn’t all rolled out in one hit. Keeping it simple until the dust settles.

Fair enough. I’m hopeful and somewhat confident that software updates will fix some of the concerns that people have with regards to family sharing. The beta testing doesn’t fully end when the product hits the market. Just need a big stink to be made for traction to be gained.

We share a car, sometimes it's nice to see where it's parked.

Two Airtags, linked to two separate accounts, taped together and put in the trunk. I expected it won't work at all because of all the metal in the car, but actually works perfectly.

So I AirTagged my two kids, seven and five years old, today as the went off to school. Was absolutely phenomenal that I can see they were at school all day in the “Find My” app. Well, my wife, not so much.

Ya see, I was talking a big game about these AirTags before we got them. Was absolutely certain that Apple Family Sharing would allow families to, ya know, share AirTags. Well, my wife not being so tech savvy was sending me nasty grams all day asking why, she too, couldn’t see our kids in the “Find My” app.

Was hoping these would get updated before she noticed. Doh!

I saw a similar idea mentioned as a “joke” in another thread. But it’s actually a workable solution for some things (like check-in travel bags) until Apple implement the same thing in software.
Funny thing is I can already see Tim Cook grinning as he announces Family AirTag Sharing at some future Apple Event - “AirTags! Everyone loves them! And now we’re taking AirTags to the next level - Shared AirTags!”

I know, but the pricing of AirTags is just so low (compared to other Apple products, all the AirTag accessories are more expensive than AirTags themselves), that this kind of jokes actually make sense.

Im not defending Apple in any way on their pricing strategy, as prices are wild particularly for the smaller items (cables and chargers spring to mind).

I guess the strategy of a reasonably cheap AirTag and selling everything else by choice in various levels of quality/style makes sense rather than selling an airtag already in a keyring or luggage tag etc

It gives us as buyers complete freedom to customise our use according to our individual needs.

I actually like the cheap Belkin keytag over the Apple offering and have tried to buy more, they seem to be mighty popular as they now seem to be on long delivery times :(

How did you tag them? In their school bag or something?

Would it start beeping at some point to let them know they're being tracked?

not unless they have iPhones. And if they did, you could track them already with family sharing (one big reason why this airtag limitation is dumb)

I made necklaces using those small ball link chains. Didn’t want to use their back packs since they would likely be separated from them in the case of an emergency.

The AirTags did not beep as far as I know. At least I didn’t get calls from the school inquiring about any beeping lol.

What we need for child tracking is an AirTag but with a screen. And maybe a wrist strap to secure it on them. I guess you can add a clock. And since they’re wearing it all day then maybe some fitness tracking…

Seriously though, I would love to have Apple make a barebones kids watch. No hard metals or service fees or killer features or daily charging. Just something almost like a wrist pager so I can track the kid and maybe send a thumbs up emoji so they look up and notice that I’m sitting here in carpool waiting for them to pay attention.

I’d get them Apple Watches but 1) their wrists are too small for an Apple Watch and 2) they don’t have much regard for electronics. The AirTag is more of a dispensable item that can be replaced easier.
