i have the same noise from the top left that just started. it also gets hot without doing anything, what should i do?

Get it replaced! That's what I'm doing tomorrow. Totally unacceptable. If I get another machine with any problems I'll be getting a refund.

im going tomorrow too to get my money back, ill wait a few more week and buy again..

Alright I think I am going up right now to ask them about it. I hope they don't laugh in my face and tell me how stupid I am for complaining about this pulsing whirling sound.

Most likely this sound is coming from one of the fans. Unless it's something like one of these sounds.

It isnt one of those sounds, but the thing is that I distinctly remembering it being very quiet and not making any sounds. But now it sounds like either the fans or hard drive is louder than when it was the 1st day I got it...

Now it's pulsing a lot along with the fan noise. Sounds like the hard drive is changing between two rpms.

I tried to go up today but was too late to get an appointment. The queue was like 10 people and I thought an hour and twenty minutes before closing would be enough. Sadly I was wrong. At least they let me return the mouse...

BUT NOW I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM!!!

I was working with the sun hitting the screen and I noticed a big smudged finger print under my screen. I really thought I got one of the good macbook pros with out any large flaws.

My top keys are straight. My display hinge is tight enough. No scratches on the case. But now I am finding these problems. I mean what is up with their quality control? How hard is it to look for finger prints on clean glass?

I guess I have to waste more of my time to go up there so they can see it and so I can loose m computer for an untold amount of time. I would much rather them just send me another one so I can use this for school like I should be doing.

i called apple and they are exchaning mine tomorrow

Lucky guy. Mine was BTO 2.8ghz with 320gb @ 7200rpm hd. I don't think I can exchanged mine but with my new problem hopefully they will.

I thought their quality was better than this...

I am really sorry to hear that Killjoy... I do have just a general question though, does anyone have a 2.53 MBP 320gb 5400rpm that has fans running at 2000rpm, but can also hear a distinct whirring noise coming from the bottom right area where the hard drive is?

Click on :apple:-----> about this mac---->more info...---->serial ATA and see what hard drive it has. mine has Fujitsu MHY2200BH. It is pretty noisy in a quiet room because it seems it is spinning all the time. Otherwise it doesn't bother me. Basically all hard drives with disc platters ARE noisy. NOW the only question is how much it differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. It is first Fujitsu drive I have. So I cannot comment. If you cannot stand noise at all get solid state drive- it will be quiet.

Hey, anyone who has this problem can get them replaced. I just get mine replaced by Apple, they're sending me a new one. cuz the fan noise and a little dent on the casing

Hitachi eh I guess I will just deal with it unless I see some reviews on the seagate or WD that says they are whisper quiet.

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.

istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.

I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?

I think i have the same noise though im not sure it bothers me. What i noticed (maybe i'm wrong) is that this whirring sound only comes when the hard drive is "idle". Can you confirm this? For example, even some crazy clicking through the forums here was enough to make it stay silent. Then after a short wait time doing nothing it started again.
Maybe its just my imagination... but the activity monitor seems to confirm this. It goes silent as soon as there is some disc activity (data written/sec).

I tested it again, im pretty sure now that this related to the disc activity (no or not enough activity = regular whirring sound). I would like to get a confirmation from other people with the same "issue" though (its not really an issue for me right now).

The noise I was having was definitely fan related... I called support and they agreed to replace it. I took it to the Apple store, the tech there confirmed that it was excessively noisy and sent me home with a new replacement mac. That's good customer service! :D

Fan noise

I have had my BTO 2.8 GHz, 320 Gb @ 7200 rpm MBP for 5 days now. First 3 days I had it, absolutely dead silent, not even a whisper. Yesterday, I first noticed a rather loud whirring that seems like its comming from the 123 keys in the top left corner. It is definately the sound of a fan, and it was not there before, and it is very distracting. Since I first noticed it last night, it has not stopped. I'm at work right now, but brought it in so I could have it here when I call apple.

Just fired it up and it is again there and meanwhile my HP work laptop is absolutely silent, very sickening feeling...lol. Anyways, i'm going to call apple right now and I'll report back soon.

Edit: After an SMC reset did not fix the problem, they are sending me a new machine as soon as they get mine back. I asked the CSR if he had seen/heard anyone else with this issue and he said that yes he heard something about a malfunctioning heat sensor which triggers the fan too quickly on some of the new MBP's. So if you are having the same issue, return it!

FYI there was also a small scratch on the bezel underneath the glass just to the left of the isight camera. It wasn't that big and I was willing to live with it, but i'm glad that'll be taken care of too.

Glad I found your post dudemac - maybe it's not just me. This might be related:

I have a 7 day old unibody 2.4 MB (not MBP) 250gb 5400 rpm with HDD idle noise much louder than the G4 iBook I'm replacing.

There's no clicking and no obvious fan noise (iStatPro shows 2001 rpm). Just a very audible, constant HDD whirr.

If I remove the underside compartment cover the sound clearly comes from the HDD.

I work long hours in a very quiet room with my G4 with no problems but the MB literally gives me a headache when it is running.

I'm waiting a call from Apple to take it to the store.

I've just managed to narrow down the source of the noise on mine - it's definitely the hard drive. If you remove the battery cover it's obvious. In fact, you can actually move the hard drive around a few mm's in any direction. Seems they could have avoided this with a bit of foam padding! In any case, the replacement is already on the way as I'm not happy with the screen either.

My new MBP was silent until yesterday. Now the left fan has a faint whirring/ticking noise. What's the procedure for returning it? Can I keep my hdd? It took forever to download and install vista and all my steam games, and I don't want to do that again. If I don't return it, will this noise get worse?

I could easily replace the fan myself if I had a new one, but I assume apple wouldn't just send me one.

If you call Apple Sales and tell them you need your laptop and can't be without it, they'll agree to ship you a replacement and you send yours back when replacement arrives. They send you a waiver to sign and provide your card details in case you fail to return it.

I would assume you could then get the new one, swap drives, and ship the other back. I know they check serial numbers on the machines, but doubt they check the hard drives as long as same spec.

When I bought my MBP last month it ran silently until my first update. Then I heard the loud whirring jet engine noise that is associated with a fan ramping up. At the same time, I noticed my MBP was very hot to the touch under the battery and I felt heat pumping through the left vent. I closed the MBP and let it cool down for a few minutes. When I opened it back up, the overheating issue continued along with the loud fan noise. I solved the problem by buying a laptop cooling pad for $19.99. No more loud fan noise. That's $19.99 well spent in my humble opinion. :D
