If the fans cut in on any iMac be thankful that everything is working as designed; there's a lot of hot tech in that slimline case and if it wasn't for the fans and aluminium enclosure acting as a heat sink your 2k investment would quickly go into melt-down.

Whatever you do, do not install third-party fan controls and turn off the fans completely, that wouldn't be very smart...

Is music development there's no chance of the fans coming on. I find big FCPX renders (5-10 mins) can get all CPUs up to the high 90s and brings the fan on.

See my sig. Fan on during any mid to heavy Finder operation, TM backups and during LogicX use pretty regularly and really anything where the CPU revs. I expect in my case it is mostly the cpu (4rgz) heat rather than the 295x because I rarely do anything GPU intensive. I would say 10x more too and I did do this in the link below: (helped a bit but fan still spins often, but not constantly) I'm not worried about the imac overheating, just trying to get used to the new fan noises.

LogicX processing burns the CPU and fans come on.

My new iMac 5k, i7, m295x, (ssd) arrived Tuesday

I'm kinda worried about the fan, since gaming is between 35-38 db which is slightly below the threshold where it's affecting your concentration. the fan IS loud with every game I tried and every cpu-intensive task like handbreak and always runs at max speed which i guess is around 2700 rpm.

Love this angst about noisy riMac fans spoiling gamers' fun. My kids' Playstation can sound like a jet taking off, and they play through a hot 50 inch plasma. Guess what - they just turn up the volume!

My ancient 2009 iMac produces 50% more BTU than even your top end iMac and I seldom, if ever, find it noisy or intrusive.

If I do upgrade I'll be more bothered by the graphics performance of the m295X v. m290X then the heat they produce . . . .
