I have a mid-2011 17" MacBook Pro with a quad core i7, 16GB and SSD. This is used for Java development and when under a high load it sounds like a jet taking off. I have blown out the fans to ensure no blockages.

Are the new 15" MacBook Pros the same or have they improved the cooling system noise level?

As with any older machines, they struggled more with thermals. The newer MBP's are mostly silent but obviously do make a noise when under high CPU load. But I'd say on the whole it's going to be quieter. Can't escape fan noise though as it's a mechanical thing, always going to be something unless they invent a zero resistance bearing and eliminate wind noise.
