Hi all. Seems that ever since I added a few more HDDs and a second ODD, the fans spin up every time I put the MP to sleep. Anyone else notice it? I've got iStat running and nothing seems too warm before this happens. Just curious as to why this started after adding more internals. Thanks.

Fan spin up prior to sleep

Happens to me as well. I've also added 2 internal HDs and an additional ODD. It lasts about 2 seconds so I'm thinking it's supposed to do that(?).

Suggest you check for dust bunnies inside. If you haven't blown out the dust in awhile, might be the problem. Adding more drives and ram increase heat inside the case. If your heat sinks are full of dust, won't cool as good. When I had my Mac pro's, would blow them out every couple of months.

You mean just for a second or two? This happens on many of my computers, including Windows boxes. I assume it is normal. I guess whatever thing is keeping the fan in check goes to sleep just before the rest of the computer does.

Yep, sounds about the same. I agree that it's likely normal.

I agree, I hear it a lot on other machines too. This didn't happen on the MP before adding extra components, which is why I ask.

Good point. I've been pretty consistent with blowing out dust every month or so. It seems pretty clean inside now. The system temp has gone up since adding HDDs and an ODD, but not enough to run the fans higher while the machine is on. Just seems to like exhausting all of the hot air inside before sleeping, I suppose.
