Sometimes while using my macbook pro, no matter what I'm doing (for example using Microsoft Word) it will make the fan inside my mac speed up really fast. When I quit the program, the fan speed will continue to be fast still after 5 minutes or so.

Is this the hard drive?

Also, If I purchased a mac in 2007, is it still possible to buy the apple protection plan?

Depends when in 2007. If you have owned the machine for less than 12 months then yes, otherwise no.
