I'm adding an external drive to my mac mini, hopefully one that is the same shape so I can stack it right under the mac mini. But I'm concerned by the many reports that the different solutions suffer from a lot of fan noise. I want something that's no louder than my mini, so... quiet!

The only fanless enclosure I could find is the LaCie mini. It seems that for the 250GB version there's no fan, but the higher versions do have a fan. Also, it's the only mini stacking enclosure I can find that is actually made of aluminum.

Could I buy the fanless version and stick a 1TB drive in it without overheating the drive?

Or maybe buy a 1TB version and just unplug the fan? Is there another better option?
