You don't have to subscribe if you don't want to. If you were a paid Fantastical 2 user, all of the version 2 features are automatically unlocked in version 3, plus some new stuff like limited weather support.

The app is so sloppy now though. Nag screens everywhere and icons telling me to subscribe. The clean minimalist look of this app was a big part of the appeal.

it's $3.33 a month if you buy a year. well worth it IMo. it's not a "simple calendar app" -- it has a lot of complex features and tools that power users like myself find indispensable.

you want a simple calendar app? go back to the stock iOS calendar.
Let's say you use this app for 4 years. Is $160 worth it? I've had Fantastical for about that long, and they haven't been adding amazing features all this time (without asking me to pony up another $40). So what makes you think signing up with them for $3.33/mo will bring added updates? Eric, be my guest if you want to sink $160 in this application. I'll pass, my friend.

Ie. their explanation boils down to we're greedy and want more money.

Basic law of economics, do you want a million people paying $2/month or 100,000 paying $5? YOu have to price reasonably. You are into getting a whole month of unlimited streaming content now for a calendar app monthly. Which would you rather have? One of the streaming services like Disney+ wth Marvel, content for your kids, etc or a calendar?

And businesses? Do you think a company is going to spend $5 per user for say 50 users monthly, or go back to the stock or other free app? Cmon now

I do not want more subscriptions and it seems the overwhelming number of people posting do not either. But it appears inevitable that most commercial software is going to end up subscription based. The low price of mobile apps requires a high volume of sales to generate a revenue stream that will allow a company to fund development, support, marketing while making a profit. .99 cent upgrades every year or so doesn't generate a lot of money unless the app has a huge installed based.

There is no way a calendar app is worth what they are asking - for my needs. Others will feel differently, but I'm skeptical about the value proposition for a subscription based calendar app. I like version 2 better than the stock apps, but will go back to them now.

I have them, but can't access the year view, says I need premium for that.
Did you pay for version 2? (I have to suspect you did but don't remember if there was a totally free version)
The only thing that I can think of - I had bought F2 directly, not through MAS. Where did you get your copy?

Can anyone recommend another similar app? Subscriptions model can die in a fire. I like how call certain features a "free" tier when it's something I paid money for. It's ridiculous.

Fantastical are focusing on the professional market where $5 a month for a sophisticated calendaring application is a huge productivity gain and an absolute bargain. Fantastical has already been priced towards the high-end, and it makes total sense.

They'll undoubtedly have less customers by adopting this subscription model, but I am sure they will make a lot more money every year. Having less customers to support for more money sounds like a big win for me, and they'll have more consistent revenue to invest more in the product.

People also need to keep in consideration you are getting the app across all platforms for this price. So if you've previously purchased Mac, iPad and iPhone versions, the new monthly all-inclusive price will sting less.

Bottom line - yes, this will be a huge turn off for most normal users now. They will make similar comparisons that you have done and conclude not worth it. But to be honest, Fantastical was always overkill for people who just wanted a nice-looking calendar app that was a bit different to the one Apple builds-in. This really has always been an app aimed to solve the time is money problem for professional people.

Not really. I didn’t pay anywhere near the prices people here said they did for the app. I got them on sale every year for like five bucks or so each

I love the application and love the way it is. However, no way for me to paid the subscription for the application. Please stop the ****ing stupid idea on subscription and just make the product better for the next generation. We will keep paying it

Fantastical and I are in a love/hate relationship. The only thing that works for me is the almost-natural language parsing -- and even then, it's like Alexa -- you have to know exactly how to phrase the entry and then tweak the screwups. I have submitted over a dozen tickets over the years because I consistently get errors that the version on the server is newer, the version on the server cannot be overwritten, because a calendar entry that I created on my Mac never makes it to my iPhone, or a calendar entry that I edited reverts to the old version without warning.

And now they want me to pay for a subscription? I think not.

I actually checked out the stock apps for Calendar, I haven’t looked at iOS 13. The Calendar app is a lot cleaner, in some ways I like it more than Fantastical which was a bit cluttered

Disabled App Store updates to stick wit the version 2.
Update. Oh no it's too late, it is already updated.

I get that. I purchased the iOS versions at discount for sure, but I paid full price for the Mac version back in the day. The discount now is the annual subscription for you. :D

I’ve been using Fantastical to search for events older than a year old on my iDevices, something which the stocks app cannot do... What are the alternatives now...?

They've committed to making the product better with all the extra cash they'll have coming in. You need to put your money where your money is and "keep paying it".

Of course not for a calendar app that's the problem with the math.. You can but the whole MS Office suite (however many programs it is now- Word, Excel, Powerpoint Outlook, etc) for your PC twice and upgrade over the years for that price.

BS. They HAD a paid product already and barely ever updated other than bug fixes. Their track record is out there so see the updates.

They've released minor bugfix .xx releases for the last year basically. What is being offered more than any other pay once app then?

I'm looking at BusyCal. Seems fairly similar and is $50. Looks like they have had sales where you could get it for $19.99, so might wait for a sale.

I've deleted Fantastical and I think I'll just go with the default apps for now.

BINGO. they need the recurring revenue in order to have the resources to keep adding features. they say as much in their blog.

who says i need to keep it for 4 years? that's an eternity in app years. i'll give them a shot for a year, and if it proves as essential as i think, then i'll give it another year. if not, i'll try something else.

for power users, $3.33 is a drop in the bucket compared to the time saved and increased productivity this app provides. if you feel that $3.33 a month isn't worth the benefits, then move on.

Thanks. The iOS app is 5 bucks. I've also heard good things about "Things 3" ... and it's 10 bucks ... but it looks feature-packed. I'm just using the default apps for the time being as well.

I use Fantastical on my iPhone and I really like it. It's not amazing or anything. Up until now they have charged a hefty (single) price for the upgrade (like $40+), so I've always tried to wait for a sale. Now that they are moving to a subscription-- for a simple calendar app (as nice as it may be), it's no, heck no, no chance in hades that I will fork over $5/mo for this. Hands down this is a non-starter. While I think they make very quality software, and they deserve to be paid for their time developing and maintaining it, there's zero chance I will subscribe monthly/indefinitely for a one-trick-pony app like this. Get a clue AgileBits. Bring back the single app fee. I will gladly fork over $40 bucks or so for this app. But no more subscriptions, please. By comparison, Microsoft Office 365 works out to $5.83/mo and comes with 6 apps and 2 services. So AgileBits is clearly greedy and out of their minds on this.

The company you are thinking of is Flexibits. AgileBits makes 1Password. (You can hate on AgileBits all you want but you can't blame them for this ;))
