"money well spent, many pleasant exchanges with them over email, gave me a free month or two, they didn't screw anyone." Glad they have a happy paying customer in ERICG301!

I love Fantastical. I find the subscription pricing quite absurd, but it's been so essential to my work in the last 3-4 years that I paid it anyway. Nothing else I tried really comes close. If it did, I'd cancel.

Guess folk like me: professional with disposable income who values constant support over $.

Took me all of 5 minutes of the trial to decide to drop them my filthy hard earned lucre. Recently took advantage of the family plan to get my wife upgraded as well.

I have no reason as of now to not renew when that time comes.
Very impressive.

Agreed... I do believe the devs need compensation,

I see similar statements a lot in the context of subscriptions. To me, it implies that devs are not compensated well enough in the traditional software sales model. But how do you explain all of the software companies, large and small, that have flourished over the years using the perpetual license model? I sometimes feel that the "it's about supporting the developers with a fair wage" justification is just a cover for "it's about making shareholders happy with predictable recurring revenue", or in the case of developers in the App Store ecosystem, "It's about making Apple's shareholders happy with predictable recurring revenue, and therefore being on Apple's good side and getting preferential treatment as a developer."

I personally ditched Fantastical when they went subscription, however I came here to say that there have been MANY Fantastical-specific articles on MacRumors in recent times. It's nice that they do an expose on useful software here and there, but at this point one can only conclude that the highly disproportionate coverage of Fantastical simply just amounts to paid advertising.

power users who use and manage multiple calendars from multiple sources (and task lists)

Same with me. I have work calendars & reminders and home ones.

I love having my watch just tell me my work info when I’m working and then my home ones on the weekend.

Been totally invaluable already. Having all this on my Mac and being able to set up Zoom meetings direct from Fantastical - even better.

In a world where I sign off on over a $1m of software costs annually, $70 is chump change for what I get.

When they released V3, they didn't remove ANY of the features from V2. Everything worked exactly the same as before. But if you wanted the new features, you had to jump aboard the subscription train. they didn't screw anyone.
Mostly true. The did change the separate Watch app calendar set from paid v2. Meaning you cannot change the Watch set anymore. Had a lenghty customer service conversation with them on email—where I actually have them saying it would be supported and then they took it bad. That part was bad business decision and false promise which is documented and yet...

I'm not a subscriber, but as a former purchaser, I still love when they put out updates. It's my reminder to go back to the app store and give them another 1-star rating. :)

That all sounds rather petty and pointless. You’ve reviewed them, done your 1 star (as is your right). Move on.

sounds like we need to create a fantastical fans sub thread...

I had purchased v2 of Fantastical for the iPhone, iPad and my Mac, and then they decided decided to release v3 which took away some of the features of v2 (time to leave notification I am looking at you..). All the time they kept stating stating that they did not remove features. I wish they would have followed Agenda's model, where you get to keep whatever features they add while subscribed. I subscribed but won't be renewing as discovered that for my purposes the stock calendar works best for me.

Yep, it's a petty move tit-for-tat. Future buyers should beware. I wish I could be one and done, but new updates can wipe out previous ratings. So my burden to warn others continues.

The Fantastical developers ought to follow the lead of the Dropzone developer - he recently announced a Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime purchase. I of course couldn't sit that one out.
I initially had "given up" on ever getting Dropzone 4, but then I went to download the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 3 only to find out that that link was replaced with a version 4 which I couldn't wrap my head around. I went to the front page and saw the posting.

Again, its a CALENDAR app. Subscriptions, like Carrot Weather, where they have to pay to retrieve weather at certain intervals, I can justify paying a yearly subscription if I want to know the weather more than once an hour.....
I'm just waiting for the next company out there to charge a subscription for an app that tells me the time (AKA CLOCK app).
It's coming......
That's probably to come - a clock app that has a subscription based on the hour - so if you want to have just every other hour on even days shown then it's a free app. And because the clock app is free it will be off by a minute or 3 unless you subscribe at $2.99.

It's a very cool clock mind you. It has double rainbows shooting out its clock face when your subscribtion is paid.

Popular calendar app Fantastical today received an update with support for new iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 features, including Home Screen widgets and Scribble.

A dozen customizable widgets are available, providing users with the date, a monthly calendar, scheduled events and tasks, and even the weather at a glance. All of the widgets are free to use, while widgets that incorporate Fantastical Premium features like conference call detection require a subscription for $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year.

Scribble support allows iPad users to handwrite in any field with the Apple Pencil and have it automatically converted to text.

The full release notes for version 3.2:Fantastical is available on the App Store.

waiting for the onslaught of "a subscription for a calendar app? a CALENDAR app?" replies. old and tired.

if Fantastical is "just a calendar app," then it's not for you. if you see it mission control to schedule your entire life, then it's money well spent.

I am very disappointed as a longtime user that they change the agreement into a subscription just for using a Calendar. Ridiculous.

I also love how we all spend THOUSANDS of dollars on Mac hardware and complain about being nickel and dimed for quality software. Quick back of the envelope math - I use Fantastical on $3000 worth of Apple hardware (macbook, iphone, ipad and watch). It's probably my most used app, and at $40/yr, that's a drop in bucket.

I'm truly glad that you and a small handful of others find it worthwhile to spend $400+ over the course of 10 years for a calendar app. Most of us don't.

who says I’m committed to ten years? I paid for a year. That’s an eternity in App Store time. When my subscription is up, I’ll examine the landscape and see if there’s anything that comes close to replicating the features. Repeat every year.

hell if Apple had updated their native calendar app this year, the way they did to the reminders app last year, I would have probably ditched fantastical. But iOS14 didn’t touch the calendar app.

It used to do that, years ago. Not any longer. Now it’s something that developers can choose to do, if they want.

Flexibits have chosen not do do so for quite some time.

So your continued pilgrimage to the alter of Fantastical, just to spit on it, really serves no purpose. Your one star is still valued at one star. You’ve made not one jot of difference by revisiting it time after time.

In addition your apparent need to continue this is really quite concerning. It’s a software app - not a way of life. The fact that you have decided that this is a “burden” you must suffer is, quite honest, perplexing to say the least.

There are plenty of apps I don’t like and have rated one star and then moved on. Ditto 5 stars, or anything in between. Heck, to be honest, I’m not even sure I’ve rated Fantastical myself.

Life’s too short to continue this rather silly vendetta.

Thanks, Dr. Tiggr. I'll be sure to bring this up with my shrink next session.
