Does USB-C fast charge strain the battery in the long term and reduce its life faster?

No. You will have people that will tell you otherwise and to stick with the 5W brick for better battery health, but the benefits are so infinitesmal that it's not worth it at all.

If the iPhone is capable at doing fast charging from a feature standpoint, then it is aggressivly managed by Apple's software and hardware on how much juice to take, while monitoring the battery temperature. Plus, the charging speed caps out at 80% to 100% anyways. On top of that, you have Optimized Battery Charging which will further prolong your battery health.

These days, Apple's own 20W charger is super super safe.

I agree. It basically comes down to the fact that Apple wouldn’t let their device engage in something like fast charging if they believed it would damage the phone. At the same time however, there is the basic principle that you should avoid letting your phone get too hot-especially while charging since heat has been proven to have a negative affect on the lifespan of rechargeable batteries. Avoid charging your phone in the heat/outside in the sun. And also try to keep your battery percentage between 20% and 80% as that has been shown to preserve battery life the most. Other than that don’t worry too much! It’s likely you’ll need (or want in my case) a new phone before you need a new battery. 🙂
