I finally relented and bought an anker 3w 26800 pd+ portable battery pack and got a usb c to lighting cable from a company called kenex at frys electronics. Is it normal for the phone in this case a max, to be warm on the back? I guess I’m somewhat paranoid lol. The cable is mfi certified

Yes, the phone getting warm is normal, but I prefer buying using only official Apple chargers because they tend to (insightfully) over-engineer them to be safe. [1] For the most part. [2]

I have read that Anker is a reputable company, but I would not be surprised if they cut corners on their electronics to reduce size and cost. Apple is obsessed with making everything smaller so I assume their chargers are the safest, smallest possible size.

lol "over-engineered" yet my official lightning cables always break like 3x as fast as cheap gas station cables. get real... Anker products are much higher quality than Apple's offerings.

The faster a lithium ion battery is charged, the hotter it gets. Hot isn't good. Warm is ok. Don't use a fast charger on a hot day

I was gonna reply but decided not to until you responded... lol my apple cables fall apart! Amazon and anker have way bettery quality. My three year old anker cable is still working while my 9 month old apple charger in my car is fraying like a mofo. the anker cable gets used more often while charging while the car one just sits there in the pro clip holder.

in all the years of apple product, ive never has a damaged apple cable. i must take better care of my stuff than you guys

I also haven't had issue with damaged Apple cables. My folks on the other hand, rip theirs constantly...

None of my Apple cables have ever become damaged either. I guess it's an environment issue, and the end user is part of the environment.

Apple cables do not use a chemical that's supposedly toxic (at the factory). I think it's BFR but I'm not sure and I have no idea what the acronym means. So they're "environmentally friendly".

Yet the result is that the cables are a lot more fragile as a result of this chemical not being there.

I think this is the stupidest "environmentally friendly" decision there has ever been in the history of the world ever. I go through 2-3 Lightning cables per year, yet I have a Belkin cable I used in my car that lasted 2+ years with no issues. Apple's stupid decision generates 5x more electronic waste than using that tiny bit of "BFR" to have a cable that's longer lasting.

I love my wireless charging stands. I bought the Atomi wireless chargers at Costco almost a year ago. 2 in a package for $40. They work really well, better than the Samsung one that stopped working. My phones also get warm from charging, it never really concerned me. Now if they got hot, that would concern me.

Forgot to mention. I have a lot of Apple cables, and 1 of them did get messed up.

According to others on the thread it’s the end user’s fault. We can’t blame Apple

Exactly the same case here. Anker cable in my car that gets abused and stepped on and thrown around in -40 degrees Celsius and is working perfectly. My Apple cable on the other hand that sits in my backpack most of the time and sees very occasional use with my MacBook Pro is fraying on both ends and the lightning tip only reliably works in 1 of 2 orientations. Oh and it's the 3rd such cable THIS YEAR in this condition. Oh and my MacBook charger just died and I just threw it out and have to buy another one.

im sorry, Apple makes awesome hardware but their cable department all needs to get fired and replaced by the fellas making gas station cables because even those are better

Interesting, I didn't know that. You're right, in an effort to make it more environmentally friendly at the cost of material quality they've basically created a scenario where the cable only lasts a few months and has to get thrown out anyway, generating waste, contributing to the problem they tried to avoid in the first place. Did nobody think about that as a possibility? And if so, why haven't they changed how they make it in the past decade? It's been awful since my first iPhone which was a 3G!

Cheap gas station cables are typically broken right out of the package. (I know you were being sarcastic)

(UM34C USB tester)

That is testing a 12 watt power supply through a 3' non MFi cable from "Highs" (convenient store). It can carry 5 watt before the voltage starts dropping due to its own voltage.

Anker is a good choice, and I found nearly all 1st party USB cables (Samsung, Apple, Motorola, etc) to have the best performance. Apple lightning cables can exceed 12 watt @ 5 volt, Samsung USB can get close however quick charge uses a higher voltage to it doesn't matter.

One of the cheapest best choices I found are AmazonBasic Lightning cables and always go as short as possible. 6' cables aren't a good choice for an iPad due to the resistance, the wire gauge needs to be increased (true MFi will be).
